No worries, just make sure it's super super clean before you start applying. Brake cleaner or such to degrease and de-oil properly.

Can you get to it all without disassembly ?

(My defender is not here at the moment, so I can't just poke my head under the bonnet!)

Think so. The offside is easy. The nearside I did whilst mine was all apart as I was fitting a webasto but fairly sure you can get to that side too pretty easily.
