Freak minor breakage almost caused a crash
Driving home from work today in the Defender, I turned into the road that links in to the road where I live, and ended up clipping the opposite kerb as I made the turn. Luckily nobody was nearby. It took me a second to work out what had happened, it wasn't some catastrophic failure of a major steering competent... The plastic shroud/cover on the steering column had come loose and somehow fouled the wheel and jammed it as I tried to straighten up! I managed to batter it back into its proper position, although I've now cracked it so it'll need replacing anyway.
No idea what caused this to suddenly happen, it looks like a "clam-shell" type arrangement which has split apart for some reason. 1998 300tdi 90 Hard Top. Daily driver, dog bus, shooting wagon and ongoing project!

Good news that no one was hurt Thumbs Up

The plastic shrouding around the steering column comes in two half's and they are joined together with four long screw bolts and then the whole shrouding in secured to the steering column itself with three shorter screw bolts from underneath, hope this helps Very Happy
Seems like the screw bolts have come out / undone themselves Rolling Eyes 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

As Clayton says....

The 3 short screws that screw the whole shroud to the steering column are screwed into what is a counterbore in the plastic. On mine, the counterbore failed - probably because the whole binnacle which was also cracked was resting on the shroud caused the counterbores to fail.

A simple solution is to use slightly longer screws, and a large penny washer. This works, and probably the strongest. But cosmetically I did not like it.. so I flattened the inside of the shroud, and glued large penny washers with PU glue on the inside to re create the counterbore.

PS. On old Defenders, the 2 halfs of the shroud connect by 4 M4 screws with brass inserts molded in the top half of the shroud. On later Defenders, these were replaced by self tappings in the plastic. Some call it value engineering. I do not know when the transition happened. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thanks folks, I'll have to order at least the top half, as that's what I broke trying to make it driveable. I'll have a look when it's light and see if the screws/bolts are still in place or if they've come loose and disappeared. In which case I'll have to get some screws as well! 1998 300tdi 90 Hard Top. As above but on mine as well as the self tappers there is one machined screw that keeps the lower half to the column. Jeff
