2.4 puma engine cutting out!??? Please help!!
Hi all,
Thank you for having me around!!
I really need some help with my defender 2.4 puma , she is having a very bad case of cutting out while driving so far this is what has been done , changed and reconditioned!
.maf sensors
.css
.cam.s
4 injectors
.fuel filter
.relays.
.starter motor
.stop light switches
The problem happens when the engine is warm and when the accelerator is pressed more than halfway in all the gears!!
Nothing is coming up when plugged in !! I am desperate at this stage !😭😭

Likely to be the VCV on the fuel pump with no DTC’s being flagged up on the OBD system.
PF Jones have them, you can change one yourself.

Thank you custom90steve for the quick reply, to be honest I couldn't tell you ?? I discovered, after 2 garages that a lot of the work that was meant to be done were actually not done!!! Anyway !! I will look into it !

I forgot to mention that when the injectors were put back , the car behave a lot smoother than usual for about 2 days and then the problem came back!!???

If you do end up replacing the VCV here is a little how to from bell auto services https://bellautoservices.co.uk/store/defen...our-valve/

From posts on here you DO NOT need to do points 7 and 8 I.e

7. Using diagnostic system carry out the pump learn procedure.
8. Using diagnostic system carry out the pilot correction procedure.


So a relatively easy procedure, when it first starts after replacement it will not run smooth but take it for a run and all should settle down. Just make sure all is very clean before removal and on fitting new VcV

Simple stuff first - is the cooling system topped up and functioning properly with no leaks?
The cylinder head temp. sensor will cut power if it senses overheating - this will happen when the
temp. is shown as normal and will record no faults.
Hope it's this simple Thumbs Up Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right.

Fit a new one of reputable make. It is impossible to test a VCV, and all you can do is replace it and see if it solves the problem.

VCV faults tend not to produce any DTCs and consequently the main indication of a VCV fault is poor running with no DTCs. A faulty VCV can produce a massive range of symptoms from intermittent misfire, stalling on tickover, poor acceleration, and so on.

Yes the VCV can often be seen as a cure all, but isn’t always the case but seems to be cropping up a lot lately.

Mine did this too,
I changed the VCV valve and it has been fine ever since.
The VCV was only 18months old when I had to change it again.

Something I have noticed over the years on this forum is that particular questions and particular faults crop up in waves several years apart. I suspect that this is connected with the turnover of vehicle ownership, with new owners joining the forum and finding the faults that we "old lags" have dealt with in the past.

Unless VCVs have suddenly started getting COVID....
