Ultrasonic cleaning baths
I've been pondering over whether to buy an ultrasonic cleaning bath to use on various vehicle bits and pieces.

Initial searches on Google made them seem very reasonably priced and I was about to buy one, when I discovered nearly all of them are made in China, probably in the same bloke's shed (they all look very similar), and they seem to have a reputation for lasting very well, right up to the point that you first switch them on!

European and British made ones are available, and with very tempting specs, but with decidedly untempting price tags for something that won't be used that often.

Does anyone have any experience of them please, and any recommendations.

Thanks folks.

like most things there some good Chinese ones and some less good, same for British / EU made stuff. With something like this given how often your going to use it would it not be more cost effective in sending the parts out to be cleaned by a speaslcist?

I've got one of these in the back of a cupboard somewhere, I wonder if it can be used to clean small parts?

I like the idea of cleaning them in Guinness. You could drink it afterwards too (you'd never notice the difference). Very environmentally friendly!

Yes, sending stuff away to be cleaned would make good sense, but buying tools to me is like buying shoes to my wife, so a purchase is far more appealing.

Any idea which of the Chinese ones are decent please? Thanks.

Hi Joe,

I bought one from China a few years ago, specifically to clean carbs off motorbikes.

It works OK but the items you put in need to be reasonably clean to start with and it helps to use some form of detergent in the bath along with the warm water.

I left the carb in for a lot longer than I was expecting (several hours if I remember correctly) but it did come out clean and importantly with the blocked jet clear. So overall a good result.

If you do buy one it's worth checking how many ultrasound transmitters (?) they have in the bath. Mine was slightly larger than the smallest and had 4. Some of the same size only had 2, so I'm assuming these would be less effective or take longer to clean. I also went for one with an inbuilt heater which probably helped bearing in mind the length of time the part was in it.

Hope this helps.

Andy.

A while back Aldi had ultrasonic cleaners on a cheap "special buy" deal. I decided to give one a go for motorcycle carb/jet cleaning since it was a low cost "chuck away" investment. No idea where these were made but China is a distinct possibility these days. Anyhow, it did the job I required of it and it's still fit for service for the next time I need it.

Thanks. I have got a tiny one from Aldi but it's too small for the stuff I want to clean. It did seem to work well though.

I'm wondering whether these might be available to hire for short periods via tool hire outlets? Maybe you could "save up" parts then get them all cleaned over a short rental period?

A nice idea, but I like buying tools unfortunately!

I bought a "DK Sonic" 3l cleaner form Amazon in January, and it seems to do what it says on the box.

Sadly I'm only a plumber, not an electrician, so we can't afford a dishwasher....

What I do know is the 60cm dishwashers are better than the 45cm the alloys fit better… Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details
