What's your 90 Van listed as on your V5C please?
Had a scare with A-Plan today doing renewal. They had my 2.4 90 van down as a 110 double cab Confused When I asked them to change to what's stated on the V5C under "model".

I was told they only had a "Heritage" or "County Station Wagon HT", neither of which is what I've got! This got me wondering Question , is my V5C consistent with other 90 Van's? Grateful if fellow owners of same could let me know how yours are listed?
TIA

Its a commercial vehicle, chances are the car policies won't have the HT van options in them. I'm with NFU and have a 2003 TD5 Double Cab but they insured it as a commercial as it came up on their system as such, it does also happen to be our commercial as its part of the farm, our old 90HT was insured as a van as well.

Thanks lord-haggis. That's it isn't it! They only have "cars" listed and not "commercials". I expected better of A-Plan as they are supposed to "specialise" in Defenders. Rolling Eyes

Ineresting 90 Dreamer, I wonder if they even used standard descriptions then?! Fair enough you have an XS but why bother adding the TD!

This was a common issue in the past when I was an account manger for an insurance company and used to visit brokers and call centres.

Most insurance companies kept Personal Lines (car, home, pet, etc) separate from Business and Commercial, including Commercial Vehicle.

Where the lines got blurred was because Small Business and Commercial Vehicle quotations were administered in the same way you would a Personal Lines policy. Ie quick, simple , get the credit card details, put them on cover, post out the documents. Lower commissions but a higher turnover.

Downside I used to find was that Mr Broker and his Directors were only interested in the big ticket policy premiums and so never invested the time in training staff that did not have to complete their insurance exams because all they had to do was to follow the wording on the computer screens.

Many of these staff are young and still living at home, they don’t know one vehicle from another. What they do know is that they want their commission and a sale is a sale.

As new business is less likely to claim in the first three years the policy just ticks over if not checked by the policy holder. For some this maybe ok, until the claim comes through.

Call center style of brokering tends to have separate telephone numbers and separate teams who are better trained and have a team leader listening to their calls. However, when they say that as a broker they have a panel of Insurers to check and get the right policy for your needs, they really mean, let me check to whom we have a deal with and will pay the best commission.

On line quotation systems expect the policy holder to be an expert, they know via the system that the individual has pressed back to make changes to lower premiums. They are happy for you to pay because they know when the claim comes in, those changes will be investigated, then either extra payment will be required to sort the claim out or at worse, they cancel the policy from the very start and give all payments back.

Also check.

IF you are using A-Plan it is important that you only talk to the Thatcham office, this is the one which specialises in 4x4 insurance and the staff seem to know their onions.

A previous insurer (not A-Plan, I hasten to point out) insisted on calling my 1961 mobile crane a "van". Every year I would write to point out that it was a mobile crane with absolutely nothing in common with a van and insist on a written acknowledgement of said fact, every year they would write back and say that they knew my crane wasn't a van but since they didn't have "mobile crane" on their system, "van" was the nearest thing to "mobile crane". I always made a point of keeping the correspondence so they couldn't say "you didn't tell us it was a crane" in the event of a claim.

ibexman, yes, unlike last year's experience, said insurer put premium up £50 but couldn't tell me why. Then the whole wrong vehicle on policy unnerved me. They also seemed reluctant to send me renewal documentation (still waiting). Have this afternoon got a quote from NFU per lord haggis' advice - it matches other's price even though they have now dropped that. Has left me in doubt so may well go NFU despite higher premium. At least NFU recognises my Landy as a commercial!

....absolutely blackwolf - I'd try and claim and it'd be but you said you had a station wagon! BTW, I was talking to Thatcham as far as I know like last year.

My 110 double cab pick up is a commercial so I usually go to www.confused.com/van-insurance > 110 XS Double Cab

Thanks for the background . I thought it would be that sort of issue, domestic vs commercial.
