Has anyone tried the ProComp All Terrains? I believe they have a severe weather rating also?

they also look like copies of the AT2. I don't get why Nokian and the likes would bang on about specifc tread pattern being ideal for snow and ice that looks nothing at all like the generic AT2 clones. I'm guessing the AT makers are jumping on the bandwagon.

Pom you cant jump on the Band Wagon well M+S maybe but the Mountain Snowflake has a specific criteria to meet.

These include Sipes & extended silica values Thumbs Up

The bottom line is that the much higher grip provided by four excellent winter tyres, mounted on any type of vehicle, of any mechanical configuration, brings infinitely greater objective safety and confidence at the wheel, even in the worst conditions winter has to offer. Once you taste it, you never want go back, nor let any family member drive a vehicle without such tyres. (sort of sums it up)

Presonally I have never had a problem in the UK with snow and ice using the tyres I normally run, which are (on the various vehicle in the 'fleet') 7.50x16 Michelin XCL, 265/75x16 BFG Mud T/A KM1 and KM2, and 285/75x16 Kumho KL71. All do pretty well. the XCLs and BFGs cut through better than the KL71s due to the width of the latter, but all are ok in fresh snow. I also carry tyre chains (sets of 4 rather than 2) in winter for all of the above, but have only ever needed them once on the road (on a long stretch of 2" think sheet ice on a minor road).

In my experience now the biggest problem with driving in snow is one which tyres will never solve; it is the idiots who think that they can still drive their normal cars with normal tyres with their normal lack of competence and bring almost instant total gridlock to the road network (and then seem to think that you have a duty to pull them out of trouble because you have a well-equipped 4WD)!

Snow tyres do make a massive difference, probably most noticable on 2wd cars.

When i lived in a ski resort for 3 years, most LRs used BFG ATs or Cooper (can remember the model) both snowflake rated. They were great. Never had a problem with them.

I run BFG ATs all year round and wont be swapping to anyhting else over the winter.

I think its more about how you drive than what tyres you have, although obviously the tyres will help. Current:D4 HSE

They're lethal on compacted snow/ice! We ended up going down a length of armco thanks to the pro-comp all terrains when out in Norway a few years ago. the compound is just too hard in low temperatures to be able to find any grip. "If it ain't sideways, you just ain't tryin'!

With autumn fast approraching am starting to look at a set of winter boots to replace the AT2's. While I was impressed with the AT2 last winter I'm going for a real winter tyre this year. Looking for the same size 265x75x16

The Nokian Hakkapeliitta seems to be the daddy as far as performance goes, £190 a corner.

Also found Maxmiler which are cheaper but I've never heard of them.

What's everyone else using ?

Pom, where did you find the Nokians fo sale? I can't find any for sale in the UK. Big Cry "If it ain't sideways, you just ain't tryin'!

BFG AT's on my 90 and i won't be swapping them never got stuck last season only had to hit the diff loc when towing others out of drifts, i was the only one of 2 motors that got up Telegraph hill me and plod in their xc90 going very sideways, i do have one advantage in the traction department my 90 is always loaded heavy, down side takes some stopping.
I did just go and get a set of general at's 2 for Mrs no worries RAV 4 so she is all set up shown her how to let them down as well.
Now that is another thing how many people rember when it is realy bad to drop the pressure. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.
