I don’t think that is standard so carefully remove, and then see if anything stops working.

The cars had some re wire work, light bar, new reverse lights, speakers amp etc. But not sure why you would earth between 2 bolts?

Does seem odd. Maybe he was a sparks who used to do earth bonding

So I found out the earth strap must be linked to the handbrake light and brake fluid light as both the lights come on driving home last night, checked the brake fluid (usual sign of warning light) all topped up to max, and then I found the end of the earth strap had come off the original bolt holding the middle seat frame to the floor pan, engine off tightened earth strap to the old bolt, lights cleared.
Looks like I'll have to put the earth strap on cubby box bolt when I get round to installing that at the weekend. |

Think I’d be checking the original earths, and maybe adding something better and new. Don’t like the idea of an odd earth to a seat frame.

Yeh its strange as this morning driving in went a over a few bumps and the park/warning light was coming on and off with the bumps - so either a loose earth as I thought or bad connection on the brake fluid sensor as thats full to the max

How stiff is the park brake? I’ve had it where the cable is sticking so the lever isn’t going all the way down, so it has a springy feeling to it as it drops and doesn’t sit fully down. Worth a look.

That kind of grounding is usually a work around a temporary or jury-rigged grounding system never intended to be permanent but people being what they are often do exactly that. Completely different to an additional ground that can be beneficial but a work around fix.
I would suggest as you’ve found the issue directly attributed to its removal looking b at the factory wiring diagram and identifying the grounding for those circuits. Checking it and then correcting it properly as someone else obviously didn’t. Continuity checking the grounding points is your friend here. The brake fluid level does need to be topped up all the way as you’ve already checked, on mine it needs to stay on the absolute max. I have found before when it has been a bit lower for to go down a very steep incline and have it come on then go off again as I exit. It’s possible the additional ground was part of an audio amplifier ground system that has been removed with the additional grounding left in situ. So little update - the car has upgraded audio with a sub and amp, but I’ve also found a black cut wire under the middle inspection flap. I suspect this is the other end of the hand brake cable that goes to the dash. Going to investigate this morning before sticking my cubby in.
I suspect this wire has been flapping about hitting something that’s not earthed causing the dash park/brake warning lights to flicker. Bit nippy this morning! |
