Hi,
Idle jack is designed to keep the Defender going at a constant speed. i.e. on a hill or going over rocks etc.. as you would be going on a tarmac flat surface. I think there was a thread on this before, do a search. HTH Jack |

Not quite; anti-stall does that. The idle jack is provided because low first on a Puma (with the GFT MT82 six speed main box) is so low geared it would provide a dangerous amount of engine braking on steep off-road descents resulting in loss of control. Hence the idle speed increases under these conditions to match the vehicle speed roughly to that of a vehicle with the five speed R380. The chatter is the result of backlash in the transmission, the engine power characteristics, and possibly the classic Puma clutch problem, and seems to be normal sadly. |

Inspired by this topic i made a couple of videos.
Couldnt find a lot on the web clearly illustrating the idle control of the puma. All videos are made with feet from the pedals and in 1st low diff lock engaged. FYI going uphil 1100rpm, downhill going up to +-1800rpm Yes, the clutch is 1st generation and makes a lot of noise (60000km) Uphill outside

Without intending to start a brand bashing discussion, on the hill in the video Landrovers (Def/D3 and RR) are the only ones driving up on idle. We've tried it with other normal 4x4's and they will all stall at some point. Just as a sidenote the 110 drives it up during rain also, with TC engaging at different points but without drama or risk.
