How do I change LED Headlights back to Halogen
Hi guys I have bought a defender that has LED headlights with an led ring around them on a sidelight setting, meaning the normal sidelights have been bypassed.

How do I revert this setup back to the 3 pin halogen original setup with the wiring? Are there kits you can buy to revert them back, as I need it done for the MOT, my opinion would be that it will fail due to LED Headlamps.

Unless somebody has hacked the original wiring around, it should just be plug and play. You'd need to take one out to know what's needed, unfortunately.

Why do you think they'll fail an MOT? Unless they're particularly cheap and nasty ones, there's no particular reason why they should. Darren

Yeah i guess, i just now that, vehicles that didn't roll out the factory with LED's, arent legally allowed to have them, the rules changed a few years ago. Of course also depends on your tester. i have already swapped out indicators, sidelights and all rear lights, but the sidelights don't work because they will have hooked them up to the led headlight for the ring around it on the sidelight setting, then the full led for dipped beam.

I have looked behind and there seems to be a box junction of wires, but not sure how to create a 3pin exit for the new headlamps. Can you buy a plug and play loom for the original 3 pin headlights?

As far as I know after market correctly marked led units are fine. Are you thinking of hid sets which needed to be factory fitted or have the washers adjusters etc to be legal?

Not true.
Its totally legal to fit LED headlights to any vehicle as long as they are an approved unit ('E' marked').

As the link above states, it isn't legal to put a LED bulb into a halogen headlight (unless the vehicle is pre April 1986).
It is legal (on any age vehicle) to change the whole headlight unit to LED as long as it as an approved LED headlight.

The H4 head light connector can find with short wire tall

As fitted sidelights use 2w Econoseal connector female

Thanks guys I think really it would be best to change back, thinking the best way would be to just swap out the entire wing loom that plugs into top of bulkhead as the wiring behind the headlamp is a bloody mess.
Saves anything being exposed to corrosion and saves rejoining stuff that already has bad connections.

For about £90 that isn't bad to swap both looms out for complete standard ones.

As others mentioned in this thread, as long as the units are E marked and approved then they are fine. I believe the guidance is trying to find all those who just try and change the bulb in the original vehicle reflector which was originally designed for the beam pattern of a halogen bulb, if you swap these halogens for an LED replacement H4 bulb or whatever that was not approved for the reflector it is no good. It sounds like you have full replacement units so you should be fine. (As long as they are E marked).
It’s worth remembering Landrover also does/did fit the Nolden LED headlights to the defender themselves as original equipment so this kind of lamp has been approved as original equipment for the defender. (Although any E marked approved LED full sealed unit is ok)

I haven't checked recently, but wasn't it mandatory to have levelling and cleaning devices now?

E marked LED units are fine, non E marked units are not.
Fitting LED fixtures in a Halogen housing is not allowed.

Bear in mind whatever is fitted they need adjusting and aiming correctly too, or they’ll be on about that as well.

Meanwhile many actually go around with faulty lights… far worse if a problem.
Last night I had someone behind me with one headlight on full beam the other dipped and I’m pretty sure they were aimed at the sky.
Shining in my mirrors, I pulled over to get rid of it.

Just looking at the latest published updates ~ https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection...es/updates and it seems the latest is this:

This is a change over the earlier update in January, and appears to remove vehicles first used priot to1 April 1986. Confused
