Puma won't start after smoking!
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help with my farmers spec Puma please. Started it a few weeks ago and smoke appeared in the cab, not sure where it came from, panicked and switched off pretty quickly! I have taken out the dash and found the main power lead to the ignition switch melted at the connection to the switch. I have changed that, cleaned all the other terminals. It now refuses to start Crying or Very sad On the first turn of the key it fires up and immediately stops again, from then on it doesn't even turn over. Wondering if has damaged the immobiliser ecu?

Another clue, the handbrake cable has now seized too!

The seized handbrake cable is indicative of a broken earth connection between the engine/gearbox and the chassis. This results in the core of the handbrake cable acting as the earth, getting very hot as a result, melting the liner of the outer sheath, and then (when you switch off) the molten plastic solidifies fusing the inner and outer parts of the cable together.

You will need to find the broken earth connection and repair it and replace the handbrake cable, then you will probably find that the engine will at least crank. It's not easy to see how this also ties in with the damage to the ignition feed, but it might be worth checking under the vehicle for cut cables just in case Johnny Low-Life has had a go at stealing it (cutting various cables is often a first step for this).

Yes, the instrument pack is connected. Will it start without it? It doesn't make a difference either way at the mo...

All the earths look good, no one has been fiddling with them! I have fitted an extra one from chassis to body and battery to cover all possibilities. Nothing seems to make any difference! tried new relays too - just in case, but still nothing. Always fires up and sounds like it's going to go on the first pull, then stops and then nothing.

Remove the instrument pack connector, and with a unfolded paperclip or similar bridge pins 3 and 4. Don't refit the connector, now try and start.

No, still nothing Crying or Very sad . Having read through the other post I then checked the rev counter, that flickers when starting. I have now got the ecu off, checking the wiring, all looking good so far.

I have got access to another puma, can I swap the 10as units over to give it a try, or are they coded to the ecu?

I will check for fault codes too...

Hmmm.

Reason I went down that route is that start and then immediate stop can mean that the 10AS is happy for the engine to crank, but the ECU isn't receiving the de-immobilise code from the 10AS.

The bridge between 3 and 4 eliminates the possibility of the instrument pack being the cause of this break.

ECUs are coded to 10AS units, so you can't just swap between them.

Assuming it's a 2.4 Puma (you haven't said) check fuses 6 and 7 (in the seat box fuse box) and fuse 8 in the bulkhead fuse box.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Yes, apologies, it is a very basic 2.4, no central locking, no ABS, manual windows, no key fob, very basic. it does have a coil around the ignition barrel though, does that mean the key has a chip in it? Could that cause a problem? It does have a very rough life!!

Which is the wire to the ecu from the 10as? I'd like to check it for breaks/burning etc

Fuses are all good and no fault codes coming up.

I believe that on the farmer spec vehicle with no central locking and no "plip" on the key that the coil round the lock barrel does nothing.

The ECM is connected to the 10AS via the IPAC and the connector that Martin suggested you link. There is no direct connection between the two.

Oh, thank you. Can I test that the immobiliser code is getting to the ecu? Maybe I just need to strip it out and look for damage?

Stripped out as much of that wire (green/grey) as possible, no sign of damage and have now soldered in a replacement, still dead Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad I guess that means the immobiliser is fried and there is no signal to the ecu in the first place. Anybody got a magic wand???

!!!!I just need it to start!!!!

Never gonna have a 2.4 again, I want to partex it for a TD5!!

Pete Bell as BAS has a way to eliminate the immobiliser completely and, I think, delete the 10AS altogether. It might be worth giving him a call.
