Vintage battery charger
On clearing our the F-i-L garage ready for a new roof, this was discovered - 6v and 12v switchable

It doesn't surprise me, there is nothing electronic in an old charger, merely electrical, a transformer and rectifier (which may be full or half wave), so little to go wrong.

I still have a Halfords battery charger that my father bought to charge his Silver Ghost battery, I don't know exactly when he bought it but he was certainly using it by 1956 (photo evidence exists) and, yes, it still works. It is a twin to the one in the photo below, which appeared recently on "worthpoint", but in better condition.

Whilst they will still work, chargers like this won't be terribly good for your battery though, the science of charging has come on in leaps and bounds and a smart charger is superior in every respect except perhaps longevity.

I don't know what my dad's charger would have cost in, say, 1955, but I bet the monetary equivalent today would be surprising, probably more than a mid-range CTEK.

Simple technology then. I don't plan on using it with todays modern batteries for the reasons you mentioned.

I did a quick google of the make, and ended up on worthpoint.

Just what to do with it. Seems a shame to sling in the bin unless someone can make proper use of it. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Absolutely it seems a shame, I couldn't agree more (which is why I have tons of junk I should have thrown away). You'd hope that someone somewhere has a "garage display" in some sort of bygone days museum and would appreciate it, but the problem is finding them. I wonder if the Haynes motor museum at Sparkford has any interest in this kind of thing.

Keep elderly chargers. A lot of the modern ones won't charge completely flat batteries!

Exactly, keep an old charger to get completely flat battery start charging and then change to more modern technology to finish off.

I have other, not quite so elderly, dumb chargers for that! It is a trick that is often needed with a very flat battery and a "smart" charger.
