Hi there,
The better half has a weak back from spinal surgeries, she loves/ needs to swim and we have moved to an area that is severely lacking in swimming facilities. We recently chanced upon someone installing a swim spa, a 2.5 m by 5 m pool with a swim jet installed and got to thinking.. We have a sloping garden that could be just the ticket for installing this relatively small pool, was just wondering if anyone had installed anything similar? The good lady is a garden designer, so ideas of natural pools/ filtration are being bandied around... we would install in deck with an insulated cover for year round use. I would be installing. We're planning a swim spa, much the same, but potentially in a building for year round use depending on planning.
A natural pool wouldn't allow it to be heated, IIRC you need something like three times surface filtration area to swimming area to keep it clean. Biggest heat loss is evaporation so a really good insulated cover is a must, for construction look at ICF's. A 4 season heat pump will be needed, still looking at swim jets. If ground conditions are perfect and construction quality is spot on you can tile, otherwise a liner is safer. GRP pools are starting to get more popular and we did enquire about the welded polyethylene type but they were massive costs with the same transport and crane problems associated with GRP. The above ground swim spa / hot tub combos may also be a ready made solution - we've had a hot tub for 15 years now still going strong, hot tub in winter and plunge pool this time of the year.
