I'm pretty sure it's only 1.8m wide over the wheel arches and it's a lot narrower at roof level. 'Wide' roof tents are typically around 1400mm.
The very wide Stargazers are designed to be mounted so that they open over the side of the vehicle rather than the rear, so a 2.4m version takes up about 2.6m of roof length when packed. From what you've written you're transposing width and length...?
I've not seen one, but if they're any "wider" than 1.4m closed, then they open sideways, not rearwards. So your 1.8m example would be 1.8m lengthways down the vehicle when closed, and open put sideways to the full 2.4m length. My 1.8m tufftrek TTO2 certainly wouldn't fit to open over the rear. Too wide as you say. But a 1.4m tent will fit sideways on a rack just fine. Edit.... That makes your 2.4m long tent then 1.2m of vehicle width when closed. And the width you choose is then just the length down the vehicle of rack space you want to take up. |

We have just had the stargazer 2.4 and used last week for the first time
It’s big and very heavy, you really need 2 people to set it up Tent easily sleeps 4, there is framework in the middle The width is fine, I got a locker box made up for front and this means I have an overhang on rear but fits ok We bought the annexe too but it’s too big and heavy for us so I’m probably going to sell it

I have the annex too, whilst it is a little heavy it's perfect for using as a changing room for the family when set up for more than a day. i don't fit it when it's on the roof rack but when using the trailer i fit it every time. with regards to setting the tent up, i have mastered doing it on my own and can get it done pretty quickly now. i'll try find some pictures of mine set up so you can see |

2.4 long is the set up length so it'll be 1.2 wide when folded away. The other dimension is the width, a 1.2 and a 1.4 suit well being set up over the tailgate, but others work well set up over the sides. i would suggest having a look at the Tuff Trek range, the seem to be good and a good company to deal with. |

I recommend the Thule bars fitting exactly an a Defender roof With those I'm @ 2,40m which saves money on a boat. If you use it as a couple, the 140 cm width will be bit tiny (especially for clothes \ items inside while sleeping) |
