An offer to decline or not?
94 year old neighbour has decided to give up driving and has a 3 year old 2000 miles Renault Zoe and home charger he wants to sell and has offered it me at a very good price BUT it has a £70 a month battery lease agreement from Renault. The terms of the lease make sense for high miles drivers but not so sure it does for what would a 3rd car for me unless I sold a Defender.........

Has anyone here any experience of Renault Zoe’s and/or the battery lease scheme run by Renault. £70 is more than the cost of diesel that I put into my TDi 300 90 a month but wouldn’t fill the D240’s 85ltr tank that I can make last a month if not travelling far to off-road runs. Also while VED is zero my experience of insuring a PHEV wasn’t great - my First Ed D240 costs less than my Countryman PHEV did on that front Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Tim, so you don’t actually own the battery but instead rent it on a monthly basis? Is that so it can be exchanged should it no longer hold its charge?

Yes so long as the car is less than 10 years old and less than 100,000 miles IIRC and you get the latest tech battery which may have greater capacity than what you are replacing- bigger battery but no higher charging rate! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Looks like there may be an option to buy out the lease : https://evexpress.co.uk/renault-zoe-battery-explained

I guess it would need careful investigation to see what the vehicle might be worth with leased or purchased batteries in say three or four years time.

£840 a year just to lease the battery for a second car to use as a short distance run around, doesn't seem very cost effective, unless you can buy the car for very little money.
£840 would buy you +/- 150 gallons of petrol which would give you 6000 miles a year in a reasonably economic car doing 40 mpg.

I'd wait until we're all forced to drive a Zoe or similar. Until then enjoy the defenders while you can.
Seems a lot of money just to have a run around
