Interesting early Defender
So, this is a 1971, I presume series 3. Pretty good price at £8995 for a solid looking vehicle.

What do you think it really is?

Looks dodgy, Not much 1972 about it other than the V5 by the looks of it.

As Camelman says, in a word, "dodgy". In two words, "very dodgy".

For a 1972 vehicle is has the wrong chassis, engine, no doubt gearbox, suspension, and body. Apart from that nothing looks odd.

I suspect there was a V5 with a very similar registration on ebay at some point in the past.

They could buy this one and say its a rebodied freelander!!

Ebay were supposed to have stopped this sort of thing...

I've got a '71 series 3, in fact I spent quite a bit of time working on it yesterday, and yet there's not a lot on that car that I recognise as matching mine.

That freelander advert is ridiculous.
I know VIN plates and V5's have always been traded (quietly), but I'm staggered that there are such blatant 'ringing' kits on ebay.

The same seller has another illegal ringing kit for sale, but for some reason the "report this item" feature isn't working at present.

This is a novel attempt at circumventing the law, illegal or not illegal? What do you think?

I'd imagine that it only illegal if/when you sell the car and use it to inflate the value of the vehicle at that time.

Isn't 'clocking' cars much like that, it's the sale (on false grounds) that is the illegal act.

That said, there's absolutely no genuine reason to use that service.

all very worrying. It's one of the reasons I always value receipts/invoices more than the stamps in the book.
