So how would one go about uplifting a 110 USW to a higher 3.5T GVW, can it be done legally in the UK?

In Australia they appear to do this commonly.

United Kingdom 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 DCPU Stornoway Grey
http://www.svtech.co.uk/our-services/uprating/ and especially http://www.svtech.co.uk/vehicles/pickups/

Might be of use/interest. It can be done, given that there doesn't appear to be any physical difference between a 3045kg and 3500kg MAM Defender, it may be relatively simple.

I'd be interested to hear of anyone who's done it and to find out what's involved (as well as any consequences).

I used svtech when getting my mog downplated.

No mechanical changes required but svtech did all the paperwork and new chassis plates etc and it was all straight forward.

They do a lot of work with camper van conversions etc and have a good reputation

Australia 2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 SW Indus Silver
The 2013 brochure I have (Australia) shows:

- 110 models: HCPU, Hard Top, 5/7 seat station wagon and DCPU as 3050kg GVM, with the 110 HCPU and Hard Top also available in a heavy duty option with 3500kg GVM.

- 130 models: Chassis cab, Dual cab chassis and DCHCPU as being available only in the heavy duty option with 3500kg GVM.

Interestingly a note a the base of the spec sheet states that the "heavy duty pack option includes heavy duty suspension, reinforced chassis, heavy duty steel wheels and increases GVM by 450kgto 3,500kg".

The model range available in Aus at the time was a reduced version of that available in the UK, so were the 3050kg 130's available in the UK just a standard version with the heavy duty also available as an option?
