Recommend me a paint gun
Nothing too expensive, just something suitable for an enthusiastic amateur. I don’t really know what I’m looking for.

What do you want to spray? Lange body panels, or small parts, like brackets etc?

If it is the latter, no need for anything special. A cheap LPHV gravity feed, 1.4mm tip is more than adequate.

The expensive guns usually have a very good fan (the spray pattern is narrow and tall) which gives you good coverage and less likely to run. But for small items, fan size is not that important, actually need less fanning to reduce paint consumption.

A £50 gun should already give decent quality. I use a budget gun, mad by SIP, an Italian manufacturer. I get decent results with it. I wish I can justify a Devilbiss though.

I also find that results depend in the weather since I do not have a spray booth.

Once you get a gun, use water to experiment with the settings. There are a few settings, like paint flow, air flow and fan flow.

Cheers Dinnu. SIP sounds like a good bet.

If you are curious, I have this one. The description says ‘professional’, but I doubt that.

But then it depends on the hand / skill of who is using it, and the paint that you are using. I got some paints that were less likely to run than others. As a start, do not try water based base coats. Keep in mind that to get a nice finish you need as much as possible paint, but not too much to make it run (for 2K solid paints). That would reduce orange peel.

PS.. I am not a professional painter... just learned from my own mistakes. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I bought one one of these with a couple of different nozzles: https://gtair.co.uk/46-spray-guns

Been very happy with it. Done a car door, engine sump and a few smaller items. If all you are doing is smaller items then a touch up type gun might be better. You’ll waste a lot of paint using bigger guns on small parts. Having 2 different nozzle sizes means you can spray thicker paints like primers and chassis paint and thinner stuff like colour coats and laquers. Even the LVLP guns use a lot of air by DIY standards so you need a decent-ish compressor. You can make the most of your compressor by using high flow euro fittings instead of PCL and larger bore hoses. I have a remote regulator and water trap too. It’s worth spending time messing around with the pressure to find where the gun sprays best and also how much to thin the paint. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I've had my Devilbiss FLG-5 for 6 years now, purchased it second hand from eBay and have painted an entire 110, numerous components and wheels etc. I would thoroughly recommend it.

I have a pair of Fast Mover (actually a UK company despite the Chinese sounding name) LVLP guns in both 1.3mm and 1.8mm. They still use a surprising amount of air so be aware that your compressor may well struggle.
