I know—which is quite insane. American buyers seem to ignore obvious safety issues, which in turn allows companies to continue to churn out crappy pieces of junk that could and should be built to much higher safety standards. I think people just find it easier to remain in denial when it comes to risks of accidents except for a small minority of buyers who end up spending more to get European levels of safety.

Kind of ironic that the last original Defenders sold in the US had to have external roll cages and the rest of the world had to put up with a vehicle that can be flattened at the waist in the event of a roll over....

Does Kia also give it their 7 year warranty in the States that they give here? This Kia is really really ugly. If it hadn't the Kia badge I first thought it was a Cadillac (same ugliness).
As for the CR they do compare 2 different cars here: the KIA is more like the latest Ford Explorer: very luxury highway cars with some 4x4 capabilities. The Defender was build with 4x4 in mind and some luxury. "Why compare the Defender and Telluride? Well, they have one major overlap; they are both liars. Not bad, but they are lying a bit, at least the people who buy them are. Of course, the Defender is riding on the laurels of its history as a tough off-roader. The Defender is tough and great off-road, but most of us understand only off-road the majority of them will ever see is cutting over the grass in the Starbucks Parking lot. The Telluride similarly tries to make its owners feel like they will go off-road. The Telluride has a goofy electronic diff that “locks” until it feels “too much” pressure and will let go. That doesn’t sound like any locking diff I’ve ever heard of. The point isn’t to take either of them off-road (at least for most customers) it’s to make them feel like they can whenever they want. This is why the Kia Slaughters the Defender. Both are going to spend most of their lives on the pavement, and there is no comparison in that arena." |

That's make pretty interesting viewing. 
The Telluride would just be off that list at 21,854 for the quarter. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is in 7th position with 55,198. New Defender is 4,913. |
