Austria 2006 Defender 110 2.5 TD SW Alaska White
Rear main seal, clutch and gearbox
Hi all,

Hope you guys can help me out with your experience. Thumbs Up

I have the following challenges with my defender (15p) currently:
Oil at the bottom of the bellhousing (black).
Oil at the bottom of the R380 near the bellhousing (tranparent, I suspect gearoil).
I attached a picture. Oil is at the yellow marked areas.
Clutch Pedal: as soon as i accelerate the clutch pedal sinks in 2 or 3 millimeters. As soon as i get off the throttle pedal the clutch pedal moves up again. Its not dramatic, but I notice it.
Anyone an idea what this could cause this?

I changed the sump gasket already, but that didn’t help.
Rear of the engine is dry. Oil definitely comes from inside the bellhousing.
So wether it is the rear crank seal or I didn’t do the sump gasket the correct way.
Regarding gearbox leak: i suspect a leak at the input shaft area of the box. So might makes sense to pull the box to check?

To cover all of the above and as my td5 has nearly done 280k km, I think its time for a new clutch and a new rear main seal.
As I am a „do it yourself type“ of guy (dont trust the local austrian garages with land rovers anymore - gained experience unfortunately), i want to do it myself.
Problem: I dont have an hydraulic ramp. Anyone done this in his driveway hence carport? Mr. Green
Anything i need to take care of? Or need to consider upfront?

Sorry for my english. Hope I could explain the situation.
Greetings from Austria,
Lukas

Maybe it's me but that does not seem like a big oil leak to me. As long as it does not visible drip on your floor it's not really leaking in my opinion.

Clutch wise, yes you will see improvement with a new clutch at that mileage. I find they get stiffer with time as well. Yes when you get it there you could address any major oil leaks, but in my experience changing ok seals ' just in case' can actually result in leaks.

On the movement when taking up drive, that is a little of a worry. It could be the clutch (hopefully) but could also an issue with the engine endfloat (axial play). You coul test for that by checking for axial play at the front pulley.

When you take it all apart, change the pilot bearing and also check the clutch fork for cracking and replace if required.

Thanks. Should have said that the picture is not showing any oil. Definitely drips to the ground after a 20min drive.

Will check the pulley.
Thanks.

Just checked the front pulley for any movement. Thank god there is none.
Could it be the dual mass fly wheel?

looks like clutch and fly wheel needs a change.
Thanks.
