Fuel cooler 2016 2.2 Puma
Hi all,

Been a while since I posted, still active Exclamation

So I am looking at my 2016 2.2 Puma fuel system and I don't appear to have a fuel cooler Question

Does anyone else have a 2.2 and not have one? I am assuming these were not always fitted Question Can someone post a real life picture of one for my reference.

Thanks

According to lrworkshop.com the bypass is fitted from chassis VIN DA432380 onwards. Diagrams & part numbers can be found here -> https://www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-r...mbly_45019

2.4 Puma has a fuel cooler, the 2.2 Puma, does not.

It does, however, have a fuel system related pipe there where the fuel cooler should be. This is why it's still recommended to have a fuel cooler guard as it protects this wee pipe from the dangers of the world.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I have a stupid question.

Apart from the obvious, what does the fuel cooler do (why is it fitted) and is it detrimental on vehicles where they have omitted them?

I had it explained to me that modern high pressure injection engines leak more fuel, back to the tank, from the injector returns. Because the pressure is increased by the fuel pump, the temperature is raised.
When Diesel is heated it's ability to lubricate is reduced which is very harmful to close tolerance components like the injection pump. Also heated Diesel reduces engine power. I think its something like a a rise of 10 Β°C causes a power loss of 7.5%.
Of course I think this was over simplified explanation and I presume there are many other effects. I bet emissions are effected and I wonder how our plastic fuel lines and tank cope with the increased temperatures.

Interesting. The problem is that liquids are incompressible, so the fuel pump is not compressing the diesel, but is only increasing the pressure. Very different thermodynamics vs fluid dynamics.

Although the name is 'cooler', I always thought that it is pre heating the fuel to lower emissions. But I could be wrong. I never investigated it in detail. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Hi all,

Thank you for all your responses.

So mine also has "The metal pipe" I do a lot of hot climate travel in my defender.

I wonder if it is a "Fuel cooler" or if it serves another purpose also.

Given that I use mine mostly in hot climates should I retro fit this "cooler"?

Thank you all in advance for your help.

Kind regards

Perhaps what RustyM says consolidates more the possibility that the 'cooler' is actually a 'warmer'. If the defender was destined for a warm climate, then possibly they skip the cooler as it is not needed!!

Perhaps you can check the fuel tank and fuel filter if they are becoming too warm after a long drive. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I was wrong. Maybe I’ve been reading the repair manuals too long - I’d have wagered money I had one!

EDIT: now I’m wondering where the low point to drain the coolant is since the workbook says to drain at the fuel cooler, and there is no drain plug on the radiator... πŸ€” Roaming around πŸ‡³πŸ‡΄πŸ‡¨πŸ‡

You can drain from the thermostat hose, maybe not quite the very lowest point but very close. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. β›½οΈπŸ›’οΈπŸ‘¨β€πŸ”§πŸ§°βš™οΈ RED, WHITE & BOOST! πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§
