Back doors!

The rear door on my 1999 TD5 110 is need of replacing
Do I replace with a TD5 door of the same year, a later TD5 or a Puma rear door? Advantages/Disadvantages of either? 1999 Defender TD5 110

The later rear doors are steal and a lot more stronger than the earlier doors. Thumbs Up you will need to replace the rear window too/ glass too. Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Very well made and a pleasure to deal with.

The late TD5/Puma rear doors are much better and, physically at least, a straight swap. I fitted one to my old 200tdi 90:

It's worth noting that there's a fundamental difference in the wiring for the rear wiper on post '02 doors, which required a degree of head scratching to resolve. The details of that are here:

I went for the old style, just swapped over the glass, wiring, wiper and hardware.

I have a swing away rear wheel carrier and I think if I go with a Puma door I will do away with the wheel carrier and stick with the later Puma type. 1999 Defender TD5 110

No matter how strong the Puma door is it will still stress the door and frame and crack or warp a bit even when a regular sized spare wheel is bolted to it, especially if you off road.

I kept my swing away when I put the Puma door on mine as I off road frequently and do a lot of back road driving. I also put the Nakatenanga upper door closer and strut thingy on. i always say go for a swing away on these, my old 300 the back door frame be came bent and cracked, due to the weight of the rear spare wheel. laugh was when the car was burnt by two sweet hearts, the door frame held up, but that was after my mate welded it Laughing A later rear door was on the cards at the time, due to the door been practically on its last legs. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

To be fair, I wasn't trying that hard to get a match as the rest of the vehicle had been hastily reapplied over pink Shocked If it'd kept it longer then I may have re-painted the whole thing with a brush as I was quite pleased with the finish I managed to get on the doors. Darren

As did I. An immensly strong door with a galvanised frame and a steel one piece skin. They make the later rear doors look weak ! Also meant I could do away with the swingaway rear spare wheel carrier.
I'm really glad I took this route.
