Update - timing was correct but Fuel injection pump had to be tweaked to avoid the blue smoke BUT this was because the glow plugs were not connected at all! In fact one was missing with the hole sealed, 2 were intact and the last one had been snapped in place. The wiring to the plugs was in place but went nowhere, the relay/control unit isjust no lead to the plugs. connected and fitted to the bulkhead as normal

You might be asking how did I not know, well this vehicle was rebuilt in 2012 by previous owner. I bought it in 2015 immediatley set about sound proofing with and engine blanket so the engine has been covered up. No warning bulb in the panel so did not even notice. Previous owner had been a REME mechanic and I kow that army vehicles often do not have glow plugs. I have never had troubled starting, starts first turn but it is garaged overnight.

Since everything is fine I am leaving well alone, but the answer will be to remove cylinder head and drill glow plugs out or replace cylinder head and glow plugs. Jeff

Strange.

Never waited for the glow plugs to do anything on my current 300tdi or the 200tdi I owned before. Just jump in and turn the key then it fires up straight away regardless of how cold the ambient temp is. I'm pretty sure they are not needed(except maybe in the Arctic circle at -30C).
