Does plasma rope rot?
My Series 2a has a Mayflower PTO winch, which I converted to have plasma rope instead of the original steel wire. I did this by replacing the roller fairlead with a smooth aluminium guide slot. It’s been fitted since 2006, and the rope is of the same age.

It’s been out there in the elements all the time and I’ve not really paid much attention to it. I last used it a couple of years ago to winch my other 2a up a hill into the garage.

Today I was greasing and oiling everything and decided to unspool the rope and check it out. It looked ok, but very dirty and full of algae.

Does plasma rot? Or is it still good for service? 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

speaking with respect to Dyneema it doesnt degrade with light but looks bad. it degrades with abrasion from mud/silt/rocks etc. either through the fairlead or over the ground. hence why most run Ali fairleads to reduce wear. Sounds like it just needs a good clean with warm water - no soap! then dry it before refitting. its doesnt rot. Cheers

Alternatively take the rope off the winch, chain shorten it, and run it on a cool cycle through the washing machine while the domestic authorities are not around. Works a treat. I used to clean all my caving ropes that way.

I did think of that, but having just forked out for a new washing machine, which she is very proud of, I fear that would be a step too far! 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

I thought I had seen somewhere that direct sunlight can degrade it over time, perhaps on the goodwinch website or somewhere else that sells them 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6

I bought and use a cheaply neoprene winch cover from eBay.

Fits well enough for me and keeps the weather off it. Warn 9.5 XP.

Rope that you sometimes see wrapped around bumpers will degrade with sunlight and should never be used for a recovery. I was taught a long while ago now to trust your own equipment, not someone else’s.

It degrades the appearance not the strength. Cheers
