Bleeding the Cooling System
2009 Puma 2.4 - cylinder head gasket was replaced a year ago following which we have had a niggling problem with engine over heating. Usual symptoms - rapid rise on temp gauge and engine into limp mode.

We have changed the entire cooling system over time and the engine has been pressure checked with nothing abnormal found. Nothing we did made any odds

Thermostat was replaced with 82 deg unit which helped a bit but not a lot - OBD reader indicates engine running far too hot.

So I cut a thermostat in two and drilled out the plate putting 2no 4x30mm holes in it - effectively open circuiting the cooling circuit. However after running a few miles we noted a leak out of the modified unit so stuck the 83 deg unit back in.

Following which we had no further issues at all - towing trailers to 3500Kg with no temp issues at all and peak temperatures in the order of 85deg

Until we lost the turbocharger oil pipe and hence the turbo

So we changed the turbo and are back to the temperature issue.

We have bled this engine to death via the bleed screw as recommended - it makes no difference whatever

So we are back to open circuit cooling for the moment.

It seems to me that we are not getting the air out of the system for some reason

Anyone else experienced this or got a solution?

Check all of the hose clamps. One could be loose allowing coolant to escape. I had your symptoms and it turned out to be the loose hose clamp issue. New clamp fitted and issue sorted. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
