We use one in the wife’s Velar
It gives you access to the internet when not driving as well as life traffic updates whilst driving, whether a planned route or not. The latter is the most useful. We (UK) use an EE data only sim and only need to spend £2 a month to top it up so no big deal. I had to get EE to ‘unlock’ as the sim expects to be used in a phone or tablet and so this way it does not need a text message confirmation. I update it via EE’s website via the internet in the car. Alternatively you can take it out and top in up via a tablet or mobile phone. Hope that helps |

It’s infernally complicated but my understanding is that in the Defender there are several SIM configurations available and most vehicles have more than one. One SIM provides the vehicles uplink for SOTA updates, sos/assist, the remote app, secure tracker etc. and the other provides connectivity for the online features in the infotainment system - live traffic & routing, weather, WiFi hotspot (if specified). For the UK both SIMs are embedded eSIM modules and are fixed to a network of LR’s choice. You can buy ongoing subscription once your free period from purchase expires. For Oz and some other places, the first is embedded but the second (infotainment) is the one you have a slot for. So you can put a SIM card from a network of your choice in there. |

Thanks for this, I appreciate it.
Just had a read of the documentation again (very sparse) and it seems to say there are 2 sim cards, an embedded one for telematics and this one for wifi hotspot. However another part in the documentation states that the car's connect feature includes wifi hotspot data via the embedded sim. |

I use a data SIM in the RRS AB. I buy a “three” data SIM from Amazon. 2yrs /24Gb for £42.90 We’ve had a few now on various Land Rovers and run out of time before data. Just got my car today. No SIM card. Wtf.
Dealer and I were both confused as literally every other car had the SIM card slot in the show room. In Australia it’s supposed to be included. No idea if the factory forgot it or something has changed.  Click image to enlarge |

Might be a shortage of the appropriate bits, case of saying “bung one of those panels on & hope no one notices”, in Slovakian of course.

It's pretty frustrating. I really wanted to bring my own sim card for the hotspot feature. This car keeps saying enable connectivity but the inbuilt sim doesnt allow hotspot. It's like something is missing.

thanks for pointing this out. My search skills are suboptimal I definitely went hunting. 80 results I lost focus.
I have a 21MY and this thread listed appears to be an issue confined to North American cars that HAD a sim card slot and were supposed to be swapped over to one without. |

If you have the 2nd embedded SIM, then the service appears to be tethered to JLR via their service provider.

The only issue I have with this, is every other MY21 defender at my dealer in the showroom/ predelivery area has a sim card slot there. Literally my car is the only one without it. I guess I'll have to bug the dealer again.
The australian market cars all have sim card slots. I'll have to check the vin ranges on the lot cars. No idea. Maybe mine is just an odd one out. There is no optional data package available in Australia. |

I may stand corrected. This MY21 on Carsales (our version of Autotrader) has the sim card missing as well. hmm...
