England 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Stornoway Grey
Which Caliper?
Decided to change my 2010 Puma 90 front brake pads.
Became obvious the pistons are seized so rebuilt and aborted.

Can’t be bothered with “ caliper overhaul” so decided on replacement calipers

The choice is mind blowing 😳

£50 - £350 per caliper and difficult to establish what you are actually buying

( Chinese/ New/ refurbed..etc..) EBay a minefield, Paddocks? Craddocks? Bearmach don’t list?

Anyone got direct experience and recommendations??

Just want a nice Caliper to bolt straight on...no worries.

AP’s are the ones to go for, the cheap Chinese rubbish will need replacing again in no time. I’ve always gone with Ferrodo pads but people will recommend a fair few different brands

Ok..so Im going to get AP ones to be sure.

Does make me think thou... Britpart are less than half price...and I cant find any substantiated issue with the Blue Box parts on trawling the net. In fact more to the contrary.

Many folks condemn the Britpart without real info.

So I will be getting the AP ones... But I will always wonder if I could have spent much less?? Confused

Which ‘net’ are you looking at? Britpart are widely condemned all over and rightly so, their products are shoddy at best.

AP or genuine is the way forwards.

If it were a trim clip, or a wheel nut cover, or even a wiper.... Give the cheaper bits a try.

Don't forget that calipers should really be changed in pairs. I just didn't see you write that you were changing both.

Re: changing in pairs. I’ve been working on my own cars for 30 years and have always understood it is ok to change single calipers. Assuming the other one is working ok. Discs and pads should be done in pairs. I’ve never actually seen anything written about this, so would like to know definitively. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

the downside to cheap callipers and not just the blue ones is poor pedal feel, spongey sometimes and feels like you haven't bled them properly when you have done it 6 times already.

i would normally change both if one was faulty to avoid uneven braking, ore so on older callipers or higher mileage cars.

if the brake fluid is past its best then the callipers often suffer.

I will be changing them as a pair...
Hadn’t considered otherwise tbh... one has seized I presume the other one is similar or not far behind.

Re the “Britpart” debate.

What I mean is there are many folks slagging off the BP parts...and I’ve always avoided them based on this.

However I can’t find anyone saying their Calipers are rubbish/ unsafe. It’s more of an assumption.
Some reviews highly praise the Britpart ones... ie folks who have fitted them

I’m just concerned we are all conditioned to want branded parts. Whistle

( like my kids only want Adidas or Nike🤪)

I had the LOF callipers which are AP with stainless pistons pre installed, I painted them black with Buzzweld high temperature paint, I also used the LOF power spec disks and brake pads....amazingly I have zero brake dust now Thumbs Up 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

Have to disagree unfortnately. Experience has taught me that Britpart are the supplier of last resort, for anything.

Parts may fit, but far too frequently are found to be made of exceedingly soft cheese. For brakes and steering they would not be a consideration even if they were the only option!!!
