A video for the Caravanists among us
I’m not a caravan owner although I do occasionally tow boats. Not sure if U.K./European touring vans are as heavy as this 3.3t beast but it seems that this van is almost on the maximum rear axle loading weight without anything inside the car except a driver and full fuel tank. The Defender is a “4 cylinder diesel” but he doesn’t say if it’s a D200 or a D240.
The van makes the car look small too!
 Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

What a strange review Confused They've basically hitched up a caravan that's right on the limit of the capability of vehicle, which would never work in real life once you've added 'stuff' and your family! Darren

The Offroad Zone RV (used) typically comes in around 2.5- 2.8T TARE, so that has likely been loaded up to the gills if it is at
3.3T. Ordering a Zone base off road for our lap of Australian they are generally one of the lighter Off Road Caravans by
length compared to many of their competitors, mainly due to composite construction. Lucky we ordered the 5+2 Defender
(have to listen to the wife more often Laughing ) it has a higher payload allowance on the rear axle, 1900KG rather than 1800KG..

They were not clear if they were using their airbag suspension, if so, i am assuming you can drop the hitch height by setting
the van at a lower ride for on road.. yet another pommie bar steward down under

Hmm, interesting. They didn't make it clear at all how they might have loaded the van.

Are you planning to remove the '+2' seats in order to take advantage of that extra axle load capacity? Darren

not at this stage, when i order the Zone in the next month or so, i plan to go to their showroom and factory in
Queensland and hopefully we can model and test a few options to gauge loading and see what the vehicle can
take without breaking ADR, insurance and LR warranty clauses.

In regard to the loading i noticed they had the full jerry can holders, gas bottles, assume they filled the water tanks,
those 3 will add approx 200KG to the Zone on average, so basically coming in around 3T before you pack anything
inside, not unless of course it has a whole lot more options added to it, so far heavier TARE to start with. It is good
they tried to make it more real world test.. yet another pommie bar steward down under

I was more impressed with how the D240 performed pulling 3 tonne trailer at ease and with total control. Just shows how good the 2.0L 4 cylinder engine is.

^^^^ Thumbs Up hoping the fuel consumption on mine is not much worse than they reported on the D240.

I was super impressed with how my 240 pulled a loaded cattle trailer of the field. Standard tyres, unfortunately, in mud & ruts mode, partially thawed muddy field, and not a single tyre slip. It just went as if on a flat piece of tarmac. 2020 First Ed 110.

I do own a larger caravan (8.89 m total length) with a 2500 kg gross weight. The issue with these things is not the weight, but the very large frontal surface causing air resistance (and thus required work) to exponentionalrise rise with speed.

Additionally, the stability at speed is primarily gouverned by the weight of the towing vehicle.

I would not recommend anyone towing a 3.3 ton van at 60+ mpg (100 km/h) with a '90. Yes, it probably has all manner of electronic trickery to re-establish stability in case of emergency, but it is inviting disaster.

A big part of stability at speed is trailer nose weight. If everything’s loaded correctly, I’d be happy to do 60+ in 2.2+ tonne 100” wheelbase Defender.

Your comment is ill informed and frankly dangerous. Yes, nose weight is important but, contrary to e.g. US vans, severely limited.
Secondly left-right weight of a van in Europe is seldom balanced.

Your comment indicates to me you have very little experience pulling (large) caravans and as such you may consider refraining from commenting on the subject.
