Defender 2020 sales in Spain
I always thought Spain was a good market for the old Defender, maybe it's just the areas I mostly toured in Pyrenees and Picos, the links with Santander and the military/civil police sales...

OK Defender sales did not start in January, but then they had the added sales punch of a brand new model when they did arrive. Interesting to see what the real world competition is.

Having said that JLR sales figures in other categories shows the inroads mainstream manufacturers have made into what used to be a niche market JLR almost enjoyed all to itself.

Swamped is the word that springs to mind.

In terms of manufacture size JLR is similar to Volvo so comparison should really be there rather than VAG or BMW etc Mike

Well that's putting the cart before the horse...

These are the direct competitors for each model sold. They only sell a vehicle when someone wants it - nobody is made to buy a BMW just because BMW made it.

In the case of the Defender, JLR said they were aiming for 100,000 sales per annum - if they weren't going to take market share off their competitors then where were the sales going to come from?

Not really my point Thumbs Up

% sold in the country needs to reflect scale of operation and market share etc.

You would expect a Ford Fiesta to outsell and BMW x5

Sales performance therefore needs to be viewed against direct competitors...eg you wouldnt compare UK economic success with that of Vietnam etc

Sales variation within the year will always flux Mike

Confused

These figures are exactly what you are asking for in terms of direct competitors in very specific market sectors. Not sure BMW selling more i3s affects how many Defenders JLR sell?

Im not asking Thumbs Up

Im saying the dont compare and are largely no use...if Defender sells 100 and BMW X5 sells 500 at best is that % the same market share...but widely they arent important.

Would someone who drives a Ford Fiesta be comparable to a Range Rover...and does it matter if within that they are +/- anything? Mike

Are you looking at the same figures... Confused

Defender sold 158 vehicles in Spain for the whole of 2020.

739 people walked past (figuratively) the Defender and put their hard earned down for a Wrangler ; and a further 1,652 people walked past both and drove away in a LC Prado.

This is the market the Defender is in, and if it can't poach sales from these two, then it can't succeed.

Doesn’t market share in many respects reflect demand for a given product, and isn’t that the point Supacat is making? (apologies if stepping on toes).

Go for it Thumbs Up.. I'm lost with the argument that seems to be circular, i.e.,

That table with the Defender in could be heavily influenced by the public sector purchases in Spain. The police & national parks people both use Land Cruisers and I'm fairly certain I saw park rangers using Wranglers too. A couple of decent public sector fleet purchases could account for much of the difference. Combine that with Defender deliveries only just ramping up and Covid killing new car sales and it may not be as bad as it looks. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Good points ~ charts were headed as "2020 results: consumers in Spain" and other breakdowns on Spanish sales differentiate between:

"The Spanish new car market ends the 2020 year on a harsh -32.3% fall...

Private sales outperform the market at -27.1%
company sales also above the market evolution at -24.4%
It’s rental sales that send the overall market tumbling down in the near absence of tourism season in the covid context, freefalling -59.7%"

Interestingly, JLR is picked out as a company that's relatively immune to Covid (a point echoed both by the stats in other markets and by JLR senior management pronouncements) with a sales drop of only 12.3%.

https://bestsellingcarsblog.com/2021/01/sp...down-32-3/

And in terms of the overall market for SUVs, there's been staggering growth:

At the price presented here, € 58.000 for 90" and € 64.000 for 110" in very basic especification, the new defender is going to have a very difficult life, I'm afraid ... the market for large fleets of public works and official services, firefighters, police, forestry work, telecommunications, etc., went from being almost a monopoly of LR Defender (and Santana at the time) of a lifetime for its good price, robustness and wide configuration possibilities, to completely disappear these years that we were without Defender ... to this day, with the halo of the premium luxury and at the prices that are presented. .. will not return to the major leagues that was once here ....
