Alternator? problems
In the last year I have had three alternators fitted to the 1992 tdi. The initial problem would present itself as
no battery light on starting and the battery gauge would drop and then the vehicle would not start.
The alternator was changed (45amp) and all was well for a while but the same problem arose i.e. no battery light on start up, battery gauge down low as it could go and a non start as the battery was not being charged.
The alternator was changed under warranty and another 45 amp one fitted but the same problems resurfaced.
The alternator was upgraded to a 65 amp unit last week.
Today while driving the battery light came on and stayed on. The battery gauge started to drop as I was driving. The temperature gauge went into the red and I lost all heat from the internal blower.
Any ideas? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Watching this with some interest.

Have you checked all your earth straps?

And by check I mean remove, clean, grease and re-fit?
Second stop would be to check your alternator wiring?

I'm probably asking things you have already done but best to check Thumbs Up Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Heavy rain at the moment but I have just managed a quick look and it seems the belt on the alternator has frayed and come loose. When I gave it a visual check earlier in the rain the belt seemed O.K. but when I handled it, it was frayed and just hanging there. That would explain todays problem but it would not explain the past issues. I must check the earth strap when it is dry enough to get underneath.
Thank you for your input.
PS the bonnet cable had jammed...... Whistle had to open the bonnet by putting my fingers through the grill and pulling the cable with my fingers. Did I mention the rain..... 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Forgot that one Laughing

Hopefully a simple fix!

I'm playing a similar game but having great difficulty in just finding an alternator let alone fitting and testing it! Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

I think I'll get the local garage to come in and change the belt. I'll code it as "Next time you are in getting some milk or a loaf of bread could you call down?... 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Right I have finally got this sorted. The main culprit was...bad workmanship. The wiring from the alternator was dodgy and bodged. The garage that did it got the alternators changed under warranty with their supplier. When the third alternator fitted started acting up I went to a different garage. The alternator was fine, the battery was fine but the wiring from the alternator was not great. Anyway I am glad it is sorted and I have a healthy reading on my gauge.
The gauge was giving a low reading which is how I knew I had a problem (again) before I got stranded somewhere. I had checked the battery and it was reading low. The outputs on the alternator are hard to get at which is why I had a garage check it out. Like I said something simple but it should not have been there. Thumbs Up 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
