Hello all.
Fuel additives, are they worth it? And for what reason. Just had my french MOT and passed, so all good on the emissions test from a legal standpoint. But I don’t want to rest on my laurels. Fumes are clean once running, but there’s always a belch when firing up from cold, and it’s a little blue-grey for the following 5 mins. Further, when really cold, can struggle a bit to start. Also just wondering about ‘cleaning’ the internal parts. So I’m after thoughts on the following additives and whether they a. Work, and b. Are advised? Engine Cleaner Turbo Cleaner Cold starter Fume cleaner. Do they work, what’s best practice? I have access to various brands including Wynn, Bardahl, and Facom. Ta  Monsieur Le Grenadier

Forte make a great range of products that many garages use. I’ve used their injector cleaners on Petrol cars and they worked really well. I.e I took a 17 year old Vauxhall’ 2.2 (Z22se engine) Astra coupe for its mot after running the injector cleaner through and the emissions were so low he called me over to show me, stating he had just mot’ed a new Porsche and mine was well lower than that.

Runs lovely on it, smooth responsive and powerful runs like a dream. I do have an Alive tune as well but she does shift when you want I can tell you! I would definitely say it keeps everything as clean as possible compared to before. If it’s fairly aged I’d consider changing you VCV too as a matter of course. Mine had mine running not so well for a while and without much symptom until it packed up but was not running well. It also improves MPG and keeps injectors clean. If its struggling to start when its cold I would check that all the glow plugs are working.

I use the Millers stuff in my fuel tank every time I fill up, but I get it in five litre cans from Opie oils as it's cheaper that way. It's ghastly stuff, but does seem to work.
I've used Forte stuff (our local garage recommended it) for leaking vehicle rads over the years and it's brilliant for that, but not any of their fuel additives. I would certainly use them in preference to any other brand if I needed an injector cleaner though. |

I'm another regular user of Millers EcoMax - makes a real difference. Even more so if used with BP Advanced diesel - noticeably smoother & cleaner, and with a tad more oomph.

👍🏻 You can buy it in bulk but I don’t do big mileage so it’s shelf life would be exceeded before I’d even use it.

Additives, a subject discussed to death here. This here won’t help with cold start, but as to additives all you need is BP Ultimate which I believe has all the right additives in the right dosage you can dream of. Personally, I quickly noticed a clear difference in quieter engine tone after I abandoned using the cheaper French supermarket fuels. Happy to pay the premium Swiss prices for that BP Ultimate ever since. Not sure about availability around Cham itself, but there is one in Cluses near to you.

Millers Ecomax & decanted from Opie Oils 5L can; I use it in my Defender, Wolf, Hymer motorhome & wife's Juke. Like lots of others my 2.2 always suffered from an annoying flat spot/hiccup & since using Millers its never returned. Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains

I only use Total Excellium as it's is easily available around here with necessary additives already blended in it, this should match BP Ultimate I believe. No way am I going to put cheap unknown unbranded watery low-cetane low-lubricity supermarket fuel in the 2.4, unless I don't have the choice.
Once a year, I treat her with a can of Liqui Moly 5128 Diesel Engine System Cleaner (UK ref is different though: 21491) added in the fuel tank. This is from Liqui Moly range that is suitable for use in workshops, so I tend to believe it is more efficient/safe than any snake oil one can find in the supermarket (again  ). And yes, my personal experience is that the engine runs better immediately after and the effect last quite a few tanks as well.
I once cleaned the Turbo using Wynn's Turbo cleaner. The aerosol version that you spray directly in the turbo air inlet. It cleans the "cold" side of the turbo (and intercooler as well to some extend?) from the oily residue that has found its way via the crankcase breather pipe. I also cleaned the inlet manifold with Liqui Moly 5168 Pro-Line intake System Cleaner, this is again an aerosol and you spray it directly in the intake manifold to help clean the sludge in there and on the air intake valves. I did not notice any real change in the engine running though, maybe just revving slightly better above 3000rpm. /Mat |

The two advantages I’ve found using Millers Ecomax additive in my 2014 2.2 are; it’s quieter and it seems to rev more freely up to 3k - I’m not sure it’s any faster, but it’s definitely smoother and less clattery as it goes through the rev range.
It is horrible stuff though, keep it in a sealed bag and always use gloves. I think if I spilt the bottle in the truck I’d have to burn it...  2014 Keswick Utility 2.2 |

Liqui Moly Super Diesel Additive for me.
Buy it in 5 litres container, 300ml per fill up every tank. Lasts forever  04' 90 Td5 CSW.. |
