Black box???

Morning. I finally have some time to get to know my new Td5. I am a bit in doubt about the function of this Black box. It is connected to the Yellow wires from the ecu and to a relay of a kind. Thinking it is either a tuning box or a box that interfer with the boost Reading so that the Ecu never get a Reading above Max ? In that case the car is probably remapped? I never had a Td5 before.... but from 60 kmh in fourth or 80 kmh in 5 it Will outrun the Td4 I had very easy🤔 88 Ser. 3 1980 -sold

I’d say that was more likely to be a speed limiter. Has your vehicle got any history of being owned by a utility company or similar? 2011 130 Utility Body

99% a tuning box of unknown origin Ie a early PSI Tuning box maybe

A crude was of tricking the injection timing and getting more power
Were all the rage,a few years ago,, ditch it and get a proper map done if you need a tune California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

It could be a PSI or like tunung box.

A proper tune might be better but these are not that bad either. I have one and I like it.
Simply said it will keep the injector open a little longer to get more fuel so more power. However simply seen does a tune the same. A PSI power box does not change sensor signals so the safety features from the ecu still work.

The only thing I didn't like that it starts working at around 1300 rpm and that happens to be in the rpm range that I use in town.
I have it now installed behind a voltage sensing relay and it only works when I have about full throttle.

So don't ditch it directly. Whistle

There are jumpers inside where you can adjust the power with. Roel

The psi box i ran on a vw looked very similar, except it was blue! Rectangular, rounded corners, fixings the same. My guess is turning box Cheers

I would concur - tuning box. I would also concur with TJ101 - ditch it and get a proper tune. When I bought my TD5 it had something similar fitted. It would get to a point in the throttle movement, hesitate as if briefly going into limp mode and then accelerate like Censored It was scary! My son loved it Rolling with laughter . Ditched it for a few beer tokens and had a proper BAS tune installed - made a huge difference!

This is funny the opinion here is all tuning boxes are ****. However there is like in "proper" tunes a lot off difference.
The only way you get more power out off a td5 is to open the injectors longer. If you don't do that you won't get more power.
To make most off the extra diesel you might need to do more like increasing the turbo pressure and probably an intercooler etc. But that is not included in a tune either.

Yes I did some research and I think that the psi power boxes are probably the best in the market and in my eyes the only right way to do it for a tuning box. Just keeping the injectors open longer not changing sensor values like some other boxes do.

I don't have any hesitations or going into limp mode. So I suspect kzycnn had a very cheap version.

In Mr Zulu mode I got some black smoke but by removing the restrictions in the airinlet before the airfilter and increasing the max turbo pressure to 1.3 bar it is within limits for the Dutch MOT. Normally I switch it off before the MOT only the last time I forgot. Laughing Roel

My tuning box was Austrian - can't remember the make, off hand - it was about 15 years ago! The BAS tune made the whole thing much more drivable which, really, with a Defender is what it's all about.

On the right lower are some jumpers like the psi powerbox but AFAIK mine looks different.
On the lower side is a sticker with the serial number is there a brand name mentioned? Roel
