No headlight side lights.
After a trip to the paint shop 110 is back and painted Smile

Noticed tonight I have working side lights(above the indicator) but not side lights in the head lights like I used to have. Just a single bulb from what I remember in the headlight.....(its been a while since I looked/changed the bulb)

Is it a separate fuse for the headlight side light bulbs?

A bit dark now to go having a look. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Standard headlights don’t have sidelights in them - do you have something else fitted?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Clear lense head lights with Osram night breaker bulbs.
Its always been since I got the car and had the standard LR head lights, first click of light switch and sidelights above indicators come one and a glow of light in the head lights. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Ah might be dim dip in that case. Have a search here for dim dip and track down the resistor perhaps.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I tracked down the resistor, hiding in the drivers side wing. Two pin plug connected. One pin at least gave me 12v. I assume 12v in and then reduced voltage out to the head lights for a dim bulb?

All head light bulbs OK and connectors at rear of headlights connected.

New relay(pink one located under 10AS unit)? New resistor? Other? 1999 Defender TD5 110

That is the dim dip, best disconnected and go without the sidelight on incandescent headlights as it doesn’t do them much good anyway.

I have a sidelight in my headlights but it’s a different set up. I have the land reiziger power loom and LED headlights with pilot light which I have a piggyback loom from the above led sidelights to power them.
Which is plug and play.

If I had incandescent ordinary H4 lights I’d have to go without the sidelights in there but would have good performance dipped and main beam and of course the ordinary sidelights above.

The LED pilot light like the dim dip in standard is very similar to a DRL in that It’s good extra visibility in poor weather.
However, unlike a DRL all lights are on in use except dipped or main.
The dim dip resistor on mine in unplugged permanently and capped with a sealing connector which was good advice from Blackwolf on here.

The system I have now works really well for me.

If you weren’t a fan of LED headlights (individual tastes apply)
Then I’d suggest a bumper DRL possibly instead.

From what you’ve said I would tend to think you maybe have had a resistor failure occur but that’s based on assumption not facts. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Just unplug the resistor and thereby do away with the useless dim-dip feature.

I don't mind LED headlights just haven't got as far as spending a few hundred on LED headlights.
I quite like the extra glow in the headlights. As I have just resprayed the winch bumper I don't fancy cutting out a hole for DRLs.

Is the resistor the same as other LR models?

Fairy snuff, takes all sorts! Rolling with laughter

The only downside (apart from being a stupid and useless feature) is that it will greatly shorten the life of an H4 halogen bulb - they don't like running undervoltage - and most LEDs won't work on partial power either.

Purchased a resisitor, swapped it and....no change. Thought it might be due to lack of earth so ran an earth and no change.

Other ideas people? Pink relay under AS10 ? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Test the headlight connector with a Multimeter, there will be two lives one dipped and one main depending on which is powered up. And one ground which you should check continuity. That will help you seek out the culprit behind the issue.

You shouldn’t be getting any less than 11v on each live supply and a continuity reading as close to zero as possible.

If any of them differ then you’ve found your culprit.
I think the dim dip output is something in the region of 6.2v if memory serves my right from the past which I’ve now disabled and that would be on the dipped supply not on main.
Main beam supply should always be approx 11.8v to 14v give or take.

You may be able to remove the plug from inside the engine bay, and do it there and leaving the headlight in situ. Saves removing the headlight but maybe a bit difficult to access.

I’m not an electrical expert but a Multimeter is your friend here, it can even tell you if you have a broken circuit in the wire runs too by continuity checking the supply feed from supply side to load side. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

C9S. Cheers for the reply.

Checked voltage at the connector. 10.9v at the blue/black wire and .046v at the Blue/Orange wire. 10.9v cos the batter is flat...
10.9v I am sure was the 2nd click on the switch.
Battery on charge and rain stopped play. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Back to it between rain showers. Both sides showing the same voltage on one one wire only.
Time to study wiring diagrams. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Found a spare (new) column switch. Tried this and no joy. New multimeter has arrived so back to testing voltages at the headlight connector end. 1999 Defender TD5 110
