On board air system


Based on the “wifey system” mine is now up and running on the Defender.

Really simple to do, if you take your time and ensure the connections are tight.

Got fed up with carrying all the extra hoses, pressure gauge, and the time it took to air down, and then air back up 4 tyres.

On the front, my two schrader values are hidden by the A bar, can only be seen from the side, but easy to get to. My tubing routes go from passenger front, to driver front, joins up with a “t” and then down the chassis rail to the wheel arch, “T” off across the centre cross member to the passenger side rear, and “T” off to the driver side rear.

From where they meet before they “T” off, the tubing goes up into the wheel arch, through a grommet and up through the side fill panel for the draw system to meet the control system.

My routing had to go this way because of where I mounted my dual compressor, which I’ll hide behind a panel, waiting on the carpet. I have gullwings, that’s why my control, pressure gauge, release value are installed the way they are.

The rear valves are on brackets, rivnuts, into the rear tub, not a big fan of drilling the chassis.

All I need to do now, zip tie everything down and cover with conduit in exposed areas, but keeping the tubing on the top of the chassis rails, keeps it out of harms ways

Timings.

Air down all four tyres from 38 psi to 20 psi, 48 seconds by pulling up on the release value, blue slider, 2 in from the left
Air up all four tyres, 20 psi to 38 psi 2 mins 08, turn on compressor and turn the value, far left, and watch the pressure gauge.

All four wheels have tubing connected to simple speed lock values, hold, push, locked, wheels have these whips made up, which are stored away under the draw side fill panel. No more pressure gauges, long hoses, or value stem removers.

It’s so simple, it’s brilliant.

Most of the parts he lists in description on the video are available in the U.K. or via Amazon in the states, who ship and add the customs charges, but you can source them, just make sure they are all 1/8” NPT fittings.

I have a bag of values, push fit connectors, enough tubing to a 90 or 110, 4 schrader values, a tube cutter, Teflon tape and two spare rear valve brackets if anyone wants to buy them, £50 all in. All you need to do is source the small air manifold, a pressure gauge, release value slider, and pressure release value.

Everything fits to 8mm push fit connectors and 1/8” NPT fittings.

Am i right in saying it equalizes the system as you deflate/inflate?

Also i would be interested in what you have left, as i will be hard fitting my compressor for the lockers and tyre duties soon Thumbs Up

Yes, it does equalise the pressures, as he mentions in the video, wait a minute for the pressures after you stop in/deflating.

Tubing, blue, schrader values, 4, all compression fittings, everything to install the tyres to schrader whips x 4

All push connectors and t / y connectors. And two rear schrader mounting plates.

All the gubbings for the control values you will need to get, plus the 18” flexible pipe / hose from the compressor to the manifold. Basically this

Oh forgot to mention, I have the arb manifold, which supports lockers, unused, if you want that thrown in?

A great twin setup you have, the ARB compressors are brilliant.

I wanted a bit more so added a third compressor. The output at the compressor gets seriously hot, adding heat sinks you can still touch the output without burning yourself.

With 3 compressors you get enough air with water for cleaning, or just air by itself there is enough for blowing dust out of the car.

Moisture trap, it is surprising how much moisture there is on a humid day.

i use Tmax single and double head compressors on my onboard air installs, seem to do the job well and the original design was made for pumping up more than 1 tyre. the early ARB pumps were for lockers etc and didnt really like pumping up tyres hence the later twin piston etc etc variants. Cheers
