Falkland Islands mid 90’s.
Found some of pictures from my two tours in the Falkland Islands in the mid 90’s. Managed to get to across to San Carlos which was good fun and pretty hard going back then, I think the road/track is a lot better now!

One of my mates left a few bits there in the 80’s and another one went down on HMS SHeffield...

Great to see it in more normal photos...

Just wait until BogMonster see's these!

I love these pics, seen similar ones before, and often wondered.... what happened in the event of a puncture.... huge tractor type tyres on the vehicle and a 7.50 Avon Ranger on the bonnet... Laughing

Ah the good old days when Firestones and Continentals were the go-to tyres for many and there were - literally - no roads other than the one between Stanley and Mount Pleasant.

The 'space saver spare' was quite common and still is - carrying an old 7.50R16 as a spare for 33x12.50R15 for example. The diameter is what matters and the old 11.5/80-15.3 tractorgrips are not much bigger than a 7.50. Carrying a full size spare all the time trashes the door or put a lot of weight on the roof and ... well ... you can imagine what it does for visibility if it's on a bonnet mount Laughing ---

Boy does that bring back memories Paul.

I was first there in late '82, just after the fireworks stopped, and have been back several times since.

On the first 4 month det, there was a lot more to worry about than the mud, the area around Stanley Airfield and much of the Island still being heavily mined, so off-roading wasn't really an option.

On subsequent (shorter) tours, I got out quite a bit along to the Lighthouse in one direction and along Wireless Ridge out beyond Stanley in the other. I had the use of a dirt bike loaned by a local and the (in)famous Red Rover belonging to 1312 Flt - the RAF Hercules Det.

As the road out to Mount Pleasant got built and the minefields cleared, it was possible to go further afield.

On my final det at Mount Pleasant, sometime in the late 90s, I got 2 of the 1312 Flt vehicles (a 90 & a 110) shod with new mud tyres, signed out a kinetic recovery rope from the Army workshop boys, and took some of the crew illegally off-roading out towards San Carlos. We never made it, but had an absolute 'hoot' trying and had to make use of the rope on more than 1 occasion.

Unfortunately, on return to base my Landie was spotted before we'd had time to clean it down. This led to a somewhat difficult conversation with OC MT Flight (who was heavily out ranked by some of the naught boys in front of him) and the temporary confiscation of the vehicle - until it was realised that we couldn't continue to run the flying programme without it.

Sorry for a long-winded episode of sitting on a sand bag and 'swinging the lamp', but seeing those pics just brought it all back.
