I have to wonder how long that matting stayed on the front if it's only attached with paracord?

they have had a few very expensive Defenders over the last 2 years or so, they seem to sell

Yeah, its a different world - most of the people buying them don't actually go in looking for a defender, go in looking at the premium big money cars, see a defender for a modest sum think it's cool and into the collection it goes...

If the 1,400 miles puts you off, you can buy these with less miles!!

It must be 300 miles from new, otherwise wouldn't they all be super low?

The 1991 Defender's price tag, mystifies me? It seems it was restored by a forum member and whilst amazing condition, far from original, I cant see the why the price tag? I guess I'm missing something?? James

The 80" advertised as 7500 miles is "7500 miles since a full rebuild" when you read the details, so not low mileage at all.

Must say, I've always wondered about this. At what point does a refurbished car become new. Our Defs are mighty simple vehicles, the only real tech/engineering being the engine, wiring, running gear and drive train. The chassis and bodywork are pretty basic.

So if someone slaps a brand new V8 in, plus new gearbox/transmission, loom and ecu, and then upgrades all the key ancils with brand new items (break kit, props, suspension, fuel cell/lines, swivel bearings, drag links, wheels etc) which would all likely be done, more of the car would be new rather than old, at least from the perspective of the primary engineering and wear and tear items, which when buying a car of a certain age is what I suggest we mainly look out for. Throw in a new chassis and all that remain are the panels and original numberplate. 90% of what's under the skin is new. So if the donor vehicle had 50k on the clock, in theory only the panels, interior trim (which might also have been upgraded with new seats, carpet, trim, leather, sound etc) and original number plate will have completed 50,000 miles, the rest 0. Why should that stay as a 50k car? Just wondering..... Monsieur Le Grenadier

I think if you renewed the engine, transmission and chassis, you wouldn't even retain the number plate. Darren

I'd suggest that it should be the mileage that the vehicle has done since first registration that matters, irrespective of what has been replaced. It's the "ship of Theseus" paradox again.

But that’s the dilemma Blackwolf, if the upgrades someone has made include the engine, transmission and running gear (as many have) you’re effectively placing the mileage against the chassis, body and trim. And as I mentioned before, for some the only thing left is the chassis and body panels. Yet whilst they suffer wear and tear, they’re basically inert and if we’ll looked after can be almost in the same condition at mile 50k as mile 1. Unlike all the running gear/drive train I mentioned above.

Who cares? Mileage is irrelevant anyway, condition is all that matters and if a car has been looked after or repaired to a good standard then this will be reflected in its value.

Not suggesting for a minute that any of these overpriced collectors items are worth their asking prices, but that’s a different issue.
