2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Alpine White
Oil service light after 3k miles on puma engine
Been reading around the forum and this seams quite common if you only do short trips, which I do. But what exactly is required for the service? Just an oil and filter change?

Is it best to go to a dealer or a local specialist? Closest dealer to me is Inchape Preston, anyone had dealing with them?

Out of interest when was the oil last changed, in terms of months?

Yes it’s a oil and filter change, simple enough to do yourself if you’re that way inclined or by your independent garage. A main dealer will of course carry out this work if you’re feeling flush.

How does this fit in with your normal service schedule? If it’s almost due you may as well get the scheduled service done at the same time.

The attached is worth a read if you have not read already.

https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic74776.html

Note:- if the oil service counter was not set last time it had an oil change then the counter has still been running and would give a false reading.
Worth checking your oil level to see how far above the max mark it is as that gives an indication on whether the oil has been diluted with diesel and by how much.

In the end worth doing an oil change. New oil, oil filter and drain plug. Then make sure the oil counter is reset every oil change, irrespective of whether the oil service light has been triggered or not.

Doing an oil and filter change is very easy for you or an Indy. Just make sure the correct oil is used as its vital it meets the correct spec due to the DPF fitted in the 2.2 puma . https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic34176.html

A good filter is also key. I always use genuine landrover filters. They are only circa £11. Plus a new drain plug, again genuine from dealer at circa £3.50.

I think the message comes up 12 months from the last message reset regardless of oil contamination.

^^^^^^

Yep that’s correct. Well to be pedantic, it’s since the last counter reset , not message reset as a message may not have come up before the last oil change and counter reset.

One year or
12k miles or
Due to oil dilution with diesel from DPF regenerations.

All in the link I posted above.

For peace of mind I would change the oil, oil filter and drain plug and reset the service indicator. That way you can then monitor accurately if you have a dilution problem.

My 2.2 Puma only does 3000 miles per annum, mostly short trips and never had a noticeable problem with oil dilution. Defender 90XS SW
