Aftermarket expansion tanks
My 2.2 has an odd issue where if you top off the expansion tank when cold, it will spit a small amount of coolant out the cap until it's down to about half an inch below the line, and then stabilise. The problem is that the heater works noticeably less well when the level is down at all. The cap has been replaced with the same result. It's been doing it more or less since I bought the vehicle 2 years ago so I'm not that worried about some insidious cause but it just annoys me. I have been thinking about an aftermarket expansion tank as the standard one is cheap plastic junk anyway and flaps around on rough roads.

I've looked at a few but the prices are pretty steep - the Optimill one is a thing of beauty but er ... £270! Allisport is a bit cheaper but still quite pricey and appears to rely on the original cap so may still do the same.

What other options are there for metal ones - preferably at more reasonable prices like £100 or so? Ideally with a sight gauge. ---

Same problem here, since new. I suspect the LR cap is just no good as they all seem to do this.

Based on information learned on this forum I am going to try IVECO 99489567 as a replacement as others have had good results. Maybe worth a try? Roaming around 🇳🇴🇨🇭

The problem is with the cap rather than the tank and as DeeEss says, the solution is an Iveco replacement.

Thanks. I guess I am also concerned about the longevity of the tank - silly thing that it is, sat on a tall plastic bracket, it just looks like a weak point. I'll see if I can get one of the Iveco caps (no chance of finding one here but maybe Ebay) but I'm still interested to know if there is a metal tank at a good price. ---

I think your concern is unfounded. The earliest Puma's are now in the region of 13-14 years old and there haven't been any reports of that part failing on here, at least. Darren

that style of plastic header tank has been used by various marques for probably over 30years now and in general it is simply not an issue........

personally have a pretty much owned from new 15year old'ish Transporter that has the exact same set-up with neither cap or tank problems

Fair enough, but many of our roads here are unsurfaced and a lot of stuff clatters around that doesn't on normal UK style roads or low speed off road use. I've ordered an Iveco cap off EBay anyway, so we'll see if that keeps the pink stuff in first.

The Optimill tank is a thing of great beauty and craftsmanship, but in the context of Bogmonster's question (and having from work associates some idea of conditions in the South Atlantic) I do think that actually the plastic tank might be more durable, I could see the aluminium (I assume that is it aluminium TIG welded) work-hardening and failing quicker than the plastic one.

That being said I think the header tank is a long way down the list of things that will fail one a TDCi used in arduous conditions, most of the drive-train will have gone long before it.
