New head install
For the last month i’ve been smelling a whiff of rich diesel smoke on startup on cooler mornings.
Last week I did some checks, no oil in ECU, everything looked fine under the hood until I found an extra 4 litres of diesel in the sump....😢

I now have a very expensive and heavy Turner Engineering crate enroute across the Atlantic at the moment.

Does anyone have any tips or pitfalls I should avoid? Copperslip on the glow plugs?, headgasket fitted dry?...Anything else?Ive done several head gaskets and head changes in the past, but never on a diesel. I have the paper manual and have been doing a little research online, but thought I better ask the experts before I start pulling the old head this weekend. Is the head really so heavy that you require an overhead lift like shown in the manual?
Patrick.

No you don’t need a lift. Why a new head? have you determined its cracked? It could be leaky injectors? A Td5 head swap is pretty simple. Lots of vids on line. Since you’ll have a new head you won’t have to worry about the dreaded broken stud in the alu head. You might also consider a Wurth Stud kit, copper nuts and maybe consider de-webbing your manifold as well as a new FPR and glow plugs while you are at it.

Good luck. If you find yourself in a pinch reach out as I might be able to assist

You don't say if yours is a 10P or 15P (or later) engine....

If it's 10P then get some steel head dowels (2x) to replace the plastic rubbish.

Its a 15P.
Ordered new dowels anyway just in case.....because I am close to the change over serial number and they were relatively inexpensive.

Yep,
AMC head, AMC head bolts. Elring head gasket, hylomar ( though it looks like tube that needs a special gun to use?)
I sprung for the “genuine” seal and bolt kit,( new bolts for rocker shaft, injector seals, copper washers, cam plugs..etc..) but what came looks like aftermarket and was not in a LR green box...and they threw everything into a plastic bag including the injector O rings which ended up wrapped around sharp bolt threads. I wont be using those now.
Rest seemed OK.
Now need to find a few days to execute the swap.
We had snow this morning and the wife wants her parking spot back in the garage.

I like this comments but what do they tell us?

Land Rover put one an original one on mine in the factory in 2003 and it is still going fine.
So does this say Land Rover heads are better? Twisted Evil Roel

What I am saying is the AMC head that replaced my failed LR head is still working fine. Mine is a 10p 19999 engine variant. 1999 Defender TD5 110
