Cherished Number
I'm about to take a cherished number from a vehicle and put it onto retention. Due to conditions laid down by the DVLA I cannot do it online it must be done via snail mail.

The DVLA states that there are delays due to Covid-19. Has anyone any recent experience as to how long a transfer takes using the old fashioned method? Defender 90XS SW

I sent some paperwork in over a month ago and haven't heard anything back yet.

Are they saying all cherished number transfers have to be done by post? I've got one to do soon as well...

I have heard that DVLA was not doing too well at present.

I have to reapply for my licence every three years and for the first time this time they have allowed me to apply online rather than via paper. It has always seemed to be a no-brainer but I am sure they had their reasons. They are also extending my licence for 9 months after it expires which does not bode well does it???

I err missed my 10 year renewal (by a month - no reminders being sent out) then was relived to find an automatic extension had been added. Went to a post office and applied and my new licence arrived within 5 days. Impressed and this was only a couple of weeks ago. 2010 XS USW

2 to 5 months for some parts of the dvla.

if you get thru to them they say goto post office where it didn't work either but you get a receipt to say you have tried to do whatever you needed.in my case tax a motor ive just bought. tried to call the number on it and the person that answers after 23 mins to say post it instead,,,,,

they tell you not to ring until 6 weeks have passed and we have had nothing. no excuses or apologies just poor service.

I've just tried to assign my plate online and it's telling me I can't and I need to send the paperwork in the post.
Unfortunately they've had my V5 for 6 weeks so don't have it to send in Sad

Will have another go in the morning..

I sent in the paperwork for a first registration of my JDM import Discovery V8 on 21 August & received the V5 on 26 September so 5 weeks!

I then assigned my cherished plate to the car online yesterday morning with no trouble whatsoever.

Only problem I have ever had with removing or assigning a number was when I tried to put one on retention but could not do it online as a previous owner hadn't declared the car as SORN during a period it wasn't taxed. Had to send in a form but was turned around pretty quickly.

I have done a couple of transactions online with DVLA recently, and they have been good! Sold one motorbike and one car, plus taken-off a cherished number, and all 3 transactions completed within a few days. I was suprised!!!
I even got the cheques for the cancelled road tax! Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

My understanding is that if it is done automatically on-line then it is really quick but if people have to be involved it is very slow for now
