Steering Box Seal Replacement (not full rebuild)
My steering box seems in good order; it has no leaks from the shaft seals and doesn't have any noticeable backlash.

I do however have a weep from the large cap on the end of the piston bore. Having looked online at photos, this cap is only held in place with a snap ring and sealed with a square profile sealing ring (o-ring). On the face of it doesnt look too hard to swap the seal but i cant see an easy way of removing the cap as it has no feature on it to pull it out.

Has anyone removed one sucessfully.

The easiest option i can see in my head is to remove the snap ring and manually pump some fluid somehow into the port on that side of the piston (where the hard line pipe uninion is normally connected.)

Cheers,

How did this go Steve?

I've found that my steering box has a leak from the same place as yours - the large recessed cap towards the front.

Looking at the prices for new ones (or maybe refurbed, I'm not sure) it has to be worth trying to replace a seal in the first instance.

Did you do it off the car, or in situ? Have you got round to it at all...!? Donald
