Sudden bang
Hi
I was driving in slow traffic about 5 to 10mph in my Defender 110 puma 2.4, 2010 with 47k and experienced a almighty bang comming from the rear causing the engine to stall, at first I thought another car had hit me but the cars were well far behind. I took the car out of gear handbrake on and it re-started fine carried on my journey about another 3 miles to work with no issues, pulled into the car park at work and inspected the underside at the rear axle and everything seemed in place. The propshaft and universal joints were sound and no play between the prop and diff and was all good. I drove home later that evening about 8 miles no issues. The next morning I took it for a short drive and when in first I could feel and hear grinding which caused a judder for a second but was fine after that. Since then I have been out to and from work several times no issues but I am left scratching my head, instinct is telling me rear diff issue or half shafts. Any ideas or help with this issue to how and why would be greatly appreciated
Raj

Bit of a strange one Shocked

First I'd be checking is that high range is fully engaged and diff lock is definitely off.

Maybe check handbrake to ensure it engages and disengages fully and smoothly.

Then I'd be draining diff oil from rear diff to check for bits of metal if that's your suspicion (drain it into something clean so you can put it back in if it's ok).

Then I'd be removing prop shaft to check for issues in UJ's and Diff/TBox flanges.

It would usually be strange for a driveline issue at the axle to make a noise like that and be intermittent, if it was half shaft, drive flange, diff etc. you'd generally loose drive (or worse something gets stuck in the diff).

Let us know how you get on Thumbs Up Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon

Drive flange starting got let go? May have jumped a spline making the bang but just holding on enough to give drive. Ray

I would check all 4 drive members first

Then check diff oils for debris, pin failure or crown wheel damage are possibles.

Not been using diff lock lately? Cheers

Check oil in diff - I have smillar experience with broken off head of crown head wheel. Result was completelly destroied rear diff internals. Car was running, but there was slowly growing noise from rear. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Id check the diff for debris, and drive shaft splines, the outer are easy to check out the diff end not so easy.
There is UJ roller bearing failure, but I’m not so sure that’d be the symptoms you mentioned, removal of the prop shaft is the best way to check.
If you do this and the vehicle is fully secured it’ll allow you to check the pinion flange for play both laterally / vertically and in rotation.
You can then also listen for any driveline noise too.

I have known handbrake shoes give a bang on release when under load such as a steep gradient. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Do you use handbrake during traffic driving? Could it be one of the shoes binded on the drum? and is causing the judder and grinding noise? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Hi guys sorry for the delay but finally found the fault, it was the gearbox output shaft making the noises and finally gave way with a almighty bang and no drive no drive, so a new Ashcroft transmitions shaft going in and while the gearbox is out putting in a LOF clutch, before the shaft went I thought it might of been the handbrake binding as it was engaged at the first click so I had it loosened to the third and forth click and all the brake calipers and disks were in good shape so i eliminated them and was scratching my head until the culprit revealed itself, thanks for all the help much appreciated

Should have read. 47k. That’s very little indeed.
It seems those shafts seem to vary in their lifetime vehicle to vehicle. Was it dry and not lubed? Be sure to find out. Thumbs Up Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧
