Scottish Green Road Club offroad day 4th Oct
On Friday last I took the 110 on it’s most serious weekend away - Saturday was spent in the southern Highlands at the Land Rover Exoerience but NOT a training day - thus was an unusually challenging run for an LRE day out, but worth every £ of the £120 cost to go and the rain came down in stair road all day making it very stinky and slippery on the trails.I have posted some photos in this thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic74744.html

Sunday and almost 200 miles drive further south I attend the annual Forrest Estates run of the Scottish Green Road Club. This run is based around tracks used on various rallies and trails in the Forest of Ae - the land is part of a quite wealthy person’s “back yard” - it also forms part of a hunting, shooting and fishing estate. The scenery is staggeringly beautiful, wet or sunny. Cost not including fuel £15 for a very challenging day out for the new car.

The estate manager is a member of our club and drives a Range Rover Sport and has a Ford Ranger pickup for his daily works drive. He also has every big boys toy known to be able to create some great special stages that vary in challenge and importantly for Freelander/Discovery Sport and Evoque drivers, they can be bypassed but the driver and passengers can spectate at every stage if they don’t want to try it. There were 12 special stages yesterday, some extremely challenging even for the tricked up, lifted and modified Duscovery 1’s and 2’s that were there. I did every stage, with only one that I ended up backing out of with huge regret and to the disappointment of the watching crowd........ Big Cry I have found that there is one huge problem with the new Defender after being used to off-roading my old unmodified 90...... the length of the car and that was what caused my problem - exiting a short section of peat bog I had to climb a very steep Rocky climb, swapping from mud and Ruts to rock crawl was no problem mid stage but I forgot that as the front lifts steeply the rear of course goes in the opposite direction and as I tried to climb it was like an anchor had been thrown out the back. Looking in the rear view mirror it was clear from the flattening of the ridge between the Ruts I was just grounding out and the front left wheel was loosing traction and churning up the surface and after 3 attempts I backed out and conceded defeat. That was the only “failure” of the day. I was relieved at the lunch stop to learn that only 3 of the 33 cars on the run had got through that stage - the modified Discoveries and a Defender 90 that had a big lift. This run is one of our twice monthly runs, most are purely drives on private roads behind locked gates in some of the most beautiful parts of Scotland.
I have created a new folder in my gallery - 4th October 2020 as there are quite a few pictures there and more to come hopefully. Enjoy.
And yes I damaged it..... Big Cry front left alloy wheel is scuffed and I acquired a couple of scratches on the passenger front and rear doors during the LRE run when we had to drive a track where the Rhododendron bushes had not been trimmed back enough, they are through the GTechniq Ceramic coating but not into the clear coat or paint but plain to see.
A taster or two of yesterday

Here is a video of the LRE Adventure Trek day I did on Saturday - taken by the owner of one of the other 3 New Defenders there - his is a D200 SE with loads of extras. He posts on a YouTube channel

great stuff Tim, thanks for sharing!

I wonder if a lift via rods or software wouldn't have allowed you to clear that one tricky obstacle? --

I think I need to chop 1m off the back of the car! My old 90 can clear the same section easily and it has less ground clearance as it’s on standard springs.

Hi Tim

Would an option be to reverse back onto the mud ruts and then lower the suspension to force the car to ground. This will then cause the suspension to raise the car to super extended hight. Would this have enabled you to make the climb?

It automatically went into extended mode without me needing to force it - I couldn’t tell if it went into the super super extended mode rumored to exist!

Here’s a little video of it it on one of the gentler sections - note how quiet the engine is - in rock crawl mode and doing about 1800 rpm

Would the Johnson rod 1.5” lift kit do the trick? The Americans seem to be fitting these as standard. I’m going to ask my dealer if they can fit one without it voiding the warranty but my vehicle is not due in until next year with no firm date given.

I wouldn’t want to fit things like those rods until the car was out of warranty. I’m sure you shouldn’t even mention your interest in fitting them to a dealership, go to an off-road go to a specialist in modifying off road vehicles as I would image a salesman or even the parts department wouldn’t know what you are talking about. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

We had several members travel up from the Lakes and the Newcastle area. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
