Wipers suddenly stopped working
2013 defender 110 SW

Hi guys,

My wipers have just packed in mid sweep. I’ve checked the fuse and it’s good, especially as the screen wash jet still functions and it operates off the same fuse...Or that’s How I interpreted the fuse diagram

Does anyone have a check process for what I should look at next, with the simplest jobs first, and how to go about it?

Cheers

Alex

The park switch is usually the culprit, cheap and easy to replace. It is attached to the motor. After that the wiper stalk seems to be the next to go even though things like the washer still works. Jeff

Worth checking that both wipers still waggle a little. One possible cause is a wheelbox locking up due to wear, in which case that wiper will be solid while the other waggles a little. If so, giving the solid one a good shove (usually in the direction it was heading when they seized) should free it. Remember if the ignition is on they'll try to park even when switched off. If this is the problem fitting a new drive cable and wheelboxes is the answer.

When I had this it was lack of lube on the spindles, they seized at this time of year due to being dry over summer time weather. Not used and then suddenly required when rain comes.

It isn’t always the park switch, but it’s possible. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Thanks guys. I tried a bit of lubrications with no results, so I then changed the park switch which also didn’t seem to be the problem as there was no change. I then thought I’d give the wipers a bit of nudge while in the on position and hey presto, this seemed to work! Left them on for a couple of minutes to make sure all was ok but then there was a clicking from the motor and then suddenly a rapid clicking/ grinding noise that’s continuous and the blades stopped wiping. If I give them a nudge they’ll do one wipe then stall and make the loud clicking/ grinding noise again.

Does this sound like the motor? Or rack?

It will be the drive rack, but it is possible that the drive wheel in the motor has become damaged (this is quite unusual though). It is exactly the problem I was pointing to in my post above.

I suggest that you get a new drive rack and two new wheelboxes, and keep an open mind about the motor itself.

It does sound in that case to be then what Blackwolf mentioned as mine makes no noise when active except for normal operational noises.

I expect due to the weather we’ve had the grease has dried up and hardened and allowed for more wear.
I always found that this time of year would be when there would be an issue after no use for months. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Thanks for the comments, I replaced the wiper motor and seems to have done the trick. Will probably regret not doing the spindles while I had the dash off but don’t face tackling that at the moment!

I have a problem through, the car won’t start now! Everything normal with lights when I turn the ignition three quarters but absolutely nothing on the final turn to start the engine. Is this the immobiliser do you think? If so I can’t for the till life of me figure out what to do to figure it out...any ideas?!! I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the battery but don’t work.

This may be a separate thread altogether!

Thanks, I double checked the ignition wiring and that was the culprit, one do the connections had come slightly loose. Glad it wasn’t the immobiliser!

Have you synced the fob by pressing it multiple times until the hazard lights flash?

Presuming you disconnected them battery before doing the job? Are the clamps tight too? Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧
