I'm not sure if its corroded on, or if there's a trick to depress the pin, or if it just comes off with brute force?

Thanks!
So I take the clip off behind from the red arrow, but what about the black arrow? Forgive my ignorance ![]() The black arrow was where the c clip was, which is removed in that pic. But is the pin on the old barrel pressed up into the mechanism, if so how do I get it down? Cheers |

Gotcha! Sorry, only the arrow image came in first time, I didn't see any text. Might be google chrome. OK, so the only bit I'm not following is the screw on the black arrow? I can't see a screw, I only had a rusty c clip. Was yours corroded on to the end of the barrel and need persuasion off? Thanks for the help, appreciate it! |

Once you have the clip off & the key in the lock you should be able to push the lock towards the handle (red arrow below) & remove the link by pulling in the opposite direction (green arrow below).
Odds are, and looks to be the case in your photo, that the parts are 'stuck' together either as a result of corrosion or simply the dried white grease that is typically found in the lock! If you struggle then try a little gentle persuasion & try to lever the link part away from the lock barrel using a suitably sized small flat bladed screwdriver and lever against the latch assembly (yellow arrow below). ![]() Click image to enlarge |

Hey thanks for taking the time to spell that out to me, much appreciated!
I'll go through all those steps tomorrow, feeling a bit more confident now ![]() Last edited by Liam Murphy on 15th Aug 2020 10:27pm. Edited 1 time in total |

As vvs says, you need the key in the lock. But, if your changing the barrels because the key no longer turned you will have to fix that before changing the barrel which will involve lots of oiling the barrel (easier now you can get to the back) running the key in and out of the barrel and slightly (not too much) forcing the key to turn in back and forth in either direction until it frees off. This is when people who are replacing the barrel for a not working key realise with a bit of work and cleaning, the original barrel works fine again

I went through the same thing a couple of weeks ago .
I wasn’t able to remove the link actuator from the barrel to expose the brass button . I tried some not so gentle persuasion and soaking overnight with penetrating oil but no joy. Instead I purchased two near handles at £12 each and fitted those instead !! I would suggest you do the same . https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |

Yeah I think I'm going to have to go down them lines too.
I've just tried dowsing it in penetrating oil and it's stuck fast. The barrel internals are so damaged that when I try tapping the barrel out the key is just flying out of the barrel. I'm going to try one more deluge of oil and try again this evening. ![]() Click image to enlarge |

Remove the whole handle assembly , just two screws holding it in place https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

The internal parts are unlikely to be damaged unless someone has jammed a screwdriver in it. In the barrel there are lock plates which are held up (Protruding from the barrel) by tiny springs. When the key is put in these springs are compressed and the lock plates are pulled within the circumference of the barrel so it can spin. As the springs seize or get gummed up with grease etc it stops the plates being pulled in enough to let the barrel spin. It can be a long boring job but lots of oiling and wiggling should free it up. Obviously if time is money it could work out cheaper for some people to replace the locks and handles. Ray My build thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic17615.html |
