35" tyre spare wheel carrier
Hi Folks,

Just wondering do many people have 35" spare tyres on the back of their truck. I'm running 35's and fitting a new rear door and wondering to weld up the holes or get a nice masai spare wheel carrier.

My question is, do they look stupid due to the size, do they get in the way for opening and closing the rear door or when trying to hitch up a trailer.

Any feedback and pics would be great Very Happy

I asked the question re 33 inch diameter wheel/ tyre combination on the second page of this thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic71957.html plus a good pic of a 33 inch setup on the back of a lovely 110 on first page.
Re trailer. If using a standard ball coupling the trailer hitch will be lower, so don’t expect it will catch. However if using a nato hitch for a penman or sankey it will as the hitch needs to be higher.

So it looks like a spare wheel carrier will likely be needed if using a nato hitch, possibly to clear the jockey wheel setup on a standard ball coupling trailer, and most likely to support the weight of a 35 inch setup due to weight on the door hinges. Plus it needs to be one that raises the spare wheel 2 plus inches. Downside is you are blocking even more of your view through the rear window,and it’s pretty poor to start with.

Thanks IanH will have a nosey through the thread. Never thought of the jockey wheel setup at all. If it did work out i'd say it would be too tight then to open the back door. Hmmmm will need further thought.

That looks like a great solution Camelman. And not a bad price either.
I’m assuming it uses existing fixing locations but the plate the wheel fixes to is offset to enable the wheel to be mounted higher, is that correct ?
Also How are your door hinges holding up with the extra weight of the tyre , and any idea what the wheel and tyre combination weigh?

Yep, it uses existing fittings but the design raises the wheel by about 3 inches I think. Had it on there since the vehicle was new running 35s or 285s and no problem with the door so far.

ah great to hear of this design. and a awful lot cheaper then other items. Whats the 35 lke on the back for reversing.

Would you mind taking a photo of the back of the truck square on just to get an idea of size of wheel to the back of the defender
