The lack of investment in updating production methods for Defender is clearly shown in the film.

People randomly placing spot welds; someone knocking on flat nuts for floor panels.


Those working on the line in 1948 would think little had changed.

End of an era, wish I had done the factory tour before McGovern fever had truly taken hold Crying or Very sad

This could have continued in production if manufacturing methods had changed, either way the LR has gone as we know and love it, in some ways I am glad the new one is so different, keep the old ones going is what I say Cool

Thank you for posting that. I enjoyed it. I did the factory tour and that video brought back great memories! I bought my celebration edition after going on it! Still love it.

All Defenders went through a leak test, If they failed they would go through them and fix the leaks until they passed. But once they left the factory building to the lot before shipping, they may have started leaking again.... it's a Landrover thing...

A great watch!
I did the Halewood tour at Christmas and was amazed at the production planning.

As the dash was getting installed, the guy running the tour told me that only 2 hours before, the dash would not have existed. It would have been made specifically for that vehicle (spec, trim colour, options, LHD / RHD etc etc. .It isn't even made on site and has to be assembled, tested, shipped and then brought to the line, literally, Just In Time Shocked 2000 D2 TD5 - ahhh bless
2006 D3 - no longer with us and sadly missed
1997 300tdi d90 - now with electrics that work!
- now with a brand new custom made soft top fitted
…...…...............….new chassis now all fixed and driving like new
2010 D4 alas no more, but a lovely colour (Nara)
2016 D4 battery magically fixed with NOCO charger

I went through a tour on the line in Nov 2015, the end was getting close. It was truly an amazing day, factory buzzing and everyone working as they were in top production mode with so many orders to complete. Being it was Nov. 11, at 11:11 everything completely stopped, you could hear a pin drop. Complete silence, it was a quite an experience. it's a Landrover thing...

Seeing that video again, it does make me think that it is actually a minor miracle that we don't have more problems with these vehicles than we actually do, it is truly shocking that as recently as 2016 a vehicle could be built with a complete disregard to any kind of modern manufacturing norm.

It is certainly no surprise that we have peeling paint and corrosion problems when you see the state of the panels entering the paint booth. Somewhat ironic that at the end they could sell every vehicle that they could make, rather different to the new one.

It would be interesting to see an equivalent video of the new process.

I've been searching for video of the new facility. Sadly, drawing a blank at the moment, not sure whether I should put that down to CV19, issues at the plant, or lack of orders?

I think new car manufacturing is over complicated. The Defender that came off that line was a simple machine until the last 10 years or so. It performed it's job well, as it was built to do.

Many if the new cars built are built "because we can". Air conditioned seats? Really, do we ACTUALLY need that?

New cars are more and more complicated to build and repair, and that's all because of us wanting to move technology forward. But creating more potential issues and things to break, is it truly a move forward? All cars have a life span, things were and break, and corrode.

Like my wife's 2009 GL320 Mercedes. It's worth about £6000, it's a beautiful comfortable vehicle, great condition, drives well. But when it needed a £3500 replacement of the DEF system, O2 sensors and catalytic converters, how do you justify that expense on a 12 year old vehicle? do you put that kind of money into something that old? in a strange sort of way, it's TOO well built. It's innards are failing, it's outer is still fine. Catch 22. it's a Landrover thing...
