Boost Alloys don’t fit
Hello,

I have a 1996 defender which was running on steels. I have gone and bought a set of 5 boost alloys and when I’ve got them home they don’t seem to fit on the front two wheels. I have noticed that they don’t fit flat against the wheel hub and therefore when driving the wheels vibrate meaning that the nuts start to come lose (I’ve had them torqued and still they come lose). As well as that as you can see from the photo they black cap also comes through where the plastic logo usually sits.

Would anyone know why the above happens and is it possible to fix?

Looks like the earlier (1983-1993) hubs with the wider drive flanges & hubs. Yours as a 1996 should have the later thinner ones where this problem doesn’t occur.

Is it definitely a 1996 vehicle? Front axle modified or been swapped with an older one?

The photo in your gallery isn't a "Boost", it's a "Deep Dish", a completely different design of wheel. I don't know enough about hub compatibility with these to say if it should or should not fit on a '96, but I'm sure someone who does will be along soon.

Looks like a previous owner has fitted an earlier axle 😳

Deep dish or Boost, either should fit a 1996 vehicle - I had both Freestyle & Boost alloys on my 1994 90 with no issues.

are you sure they arent just catching on the innder diameter of the hub?

turn drive member bolts so the flats of the bolt head don't protrude over drive member.

clean up the outside of the hub.

i had a 2010 vehicle that boosts were tight to go on, i would them in tight then removed them (hammer on tyre!) then checked areas where bolts caught by looking at inside of rim. Easily resolved.

(unless of course someone upgraded your axle!) Cheers

Definitely looks like an earlier axle. If the wheel studs have a groove cut across the end of them then they should be alloy compatible, I’m not sure if you can get away with changing anything in the hub area to remedy the problem but I’d say definitely don’t use them until you get the problem sorted - losing a wheel is not recommended and has in the past caused fatalities.

If the black hub caps stick through the middle of the alloy, then for some reason you have a "thick flange" hub axle on the front and these were never intended to carry alloys. A 1996 Defender would definitely have been built with a pair of alloy-compatible axles so it has been changed at some point.

the whole axle hasnt necessarily been changed (this would have also needed the thinner radius arms to be fitted) it could just be the swivels which have been swapped out for older ones - possibly because of corroded swivel balls etc.

Is it just me or do the wheel nuts look to be all at different angles? If the nuts are cross threaded that could be the cause of them untightening. Ray

It may be just the camera angle but I see what you mean also they don't look tight enough. I know when I had boosts on the 110 they could be a sod to get off and on the front axel. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.
