Defender 110 to 130 stretch
Hello, Im not sure if this belongs here but:
I know a defender 110 chassis has been stretched to a 130 before and that it takes a lot of work to be done but would it be cheaper than just getting a 130 chassis? and if I welded the 17" extension to the chassis what other parts would i need apart from a new prop shaft and exhaust and fuel sender

It is how the original 128" vehicles were built, but there are many tales of hard-worked ones (especially those with cherry-pickers) breaking in half. I think that altering the wheelbase is also one of the modification which requires a vehicle to be re-registered, but technically it is possible.

Unless you're building a flatbed or tipper, I'd have thought that the easiest way to get all the body and drive;line parts was to buy a 130!

Was thinking of buying a 130 but i have not found any 300tdi ones for less than 10k and I've done some looking around and I can probably extend my one to the 127" for around 2k also was planning on reinforcing where i join the 2 chassis parts due to the tales of the ones which broke in half

As above, the factory 127s were extended 110 chassis' until they had a dedicated production line. This meant that they also retained their 110 VIN/V5.
You'll need to add a second set of body outriggers, consider the chassis wiring loom and, reinforce it. Mine has extra plating to the top and bottom rails.

I'll take some over the weekend and, upload them here.

To clarify, I didn't extend the chassis myself. Mine is an early 127 so, was extended in the factory.
I personally wouldn't extend a chassis myself, I'm a competent welder and, it's not the fabrication that concerns me but VOSA/DVLA. Plenty have done similar things but, most were done before the 'new' legislation on modifying vehicles. A new chassis would give you/them the reassurance that it's 'right'.

Of course, even if you went down the new chassis route your v5 still wouldn't add up, 110s and 130s have differnet GVWs (3050kg vs 3500kg). As I mentioned before, early 127s are an exception but, it's widely documented and therefore unlikely to cause you grief if you have one.

It might be worth speaking to Foleys etc. as they've done many conversions and will be better placed to advise. I think Blackpaw 4x4 did a 110 to 130 conversion not so long ago, it might be worth speaking to them too. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

Might give foleys a call, but on a somewhat of a tight budget, was thinking of selling my 110 for a 130 but cant seem to find any for the price i would get for the 110, also contacted my local garage and said that they would be willing to help with the conversion.

PVH have this one below been sitting around for a while....may be an option for you build on to this chassis and sell on the 110 chassis and left over parts.

Thanks for that, might be a silly question but would it save time if i left the bulkhead and engine/gearbox installed when i weld the chassis, as i dont entirely fancy taking the engine out

It would save time yes but, I wouldn't advise it. You'll have restricted access, the additional weight to support/move around and, you'll have to remove fuel lines, loom etc. to do the job so you might as well remove the engine and boxes too.

It's hard enough to maneuver/line up/cut/weld a bare chassis unless you've got a huge workshop and proper lifting equipment. And, even then you need everything properly supported/clamped to make sure everything is in line when welded. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

Ah okay, was planning on contacting the local garage for assistance, as I don't have all the equipment at my house, the main reason I asked if it was quicker was that the garage may have to be shut so would want to do this as quickly as possible

Yeah, was looking at the pvh one, but not sure if I'm able to go see it, which is why I'm leaning towards doing the conversion is because i know the condition of the chassis. So I will probably do the extension and then do an IVA I believe, the main reason is I really don't have a huge budget for this
