Defender 90 TDI White Smoke shudder from engine
Hi Everyone

I am working on a defender 90 TDI (2013) which was in an accident a few days ago. This is a right hand drive vehicle and fell to its right hand side a few days ago. The engine was still running for around 10 seconds while it was on it side till the driver switched it off. After that the vehicle was towed to the garage where we discovered a lot of oil inside and around the air filter box , turbo intake rubber pipe and possibly also in the manifolds. We cleaned out all the oil from the air intake box and the rubber pipes , drained out the old oil, changed the air and oil filter and filled fresh oil.

The vehicle was started. It ran fine for around 3 to 4 minutes after which it started giving a few shudders and a lot of really white smoke. The engine temperature remained low and the oil light did not come on either when this happened. Also the oil level was fine when we rechecked it as was the water level.

We have tried to switch it back on again after this but each time the same result the engine starts to shudder and the white smoke starts coming out.

Would appreciate Defender TDI Experts can shed some light on what could possibly have happened to this vehicle engine.

Thank you.

2013 =TDCI, so as not to confuse with the Tdi engines.
Maybe oil in the exhaust.. especially since you mentioned it happened after 3-4 mins, time for exhaust to reach temperature.
If oil in exhaust, maybe it will burn off. But no idea what is the effect in the catalytic and dpf. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

White smoke, (as opposed to steam??), is usually associated with incorrectly burnt diesel.

And yes a 2013 model should be a TDCI which being electronically managed has all the usual sensors which could have been affected by being on it's side. The fact that it starts and runs for a short time before the fault occurs suggests to me it is temperature/sensor related, possibly overfuelling? - MAF or inlet/exhaust temperature etc

However, the OP does state a TDI, so should be minus the electronics!!

Hope you get sorted

How long does it shudder for? 8 expect its just burning the excess oil from the air ways.

If a tdi in my experience it will be fine once this has burnt off. What happens when boost pressure increases? More shuddering and loads more smoke i expect.

Be prepared to stall the vehicle incase it starts running away with the volume of excess oil. Cheers

I would look at cleaning out the intercooler if you havent already, it is probably full of oil.

Thank you all for your excellent advise. Especially rallysteve and Solihull Boy you were both spot on.

There was a lot of oil in the inlet manfolds as well as the intercooler which had to be thoroughly cleaned out. We also found out that the vehicle had issued with the injectors. Three out of the four injectors were giving excess fuel. Lastly whoever had last worked on the vehicle had used a bad after market intake pipe between the intercooler and the turbo which was ripped before the accident happened. After fixing/ replacing all of the this, the engine was purring like never before. No smoke and at least a 40% improvement in the engines performance.
