Why New Def will struggle in the US
Article offering a (very) rough compaison between New Def and New Bronco. Why would a proud American, who doesn't want 'just another large SUV', consider the new Defender over the New Bronco or New Wrangler? Clearly the Defender hasn't been in the US market since the mid-90's, but now it will never get back into what is arguably the largest Of-Road/Trails/Camping/Outdoor market in the world. Ho hum. Well done McG.

New Bronco: Capable. Good Looking. Practicle Trim Levels. Sensibly Sized. Competitively Priced.

That article is specifically comparing the Defender to Bronco Sport, which is quite a different vehicle to the eye-catching off-roaders that have made the headlines. And the gist of the article seems to be that whilst the Defender is better on pretty much every measure, the Bronco Sport is a lot cheaper and therefore the better bet. I'm not sure that's comparing apples with apples, to be honest Confused Darren

..of course..but how is that different from JLR ?? Well..its different on such way that for price for one pretender you get almost 2 Bronco sport.

You're absolutely right LRA. But to use your metaphor, the problem is that for 75 years LR produced an apple that was for sale at the market, that most people desired, that worked for many different people and was nothing mmore than it pretended to be and for (roughly) the right price. Now they've produced an Apple (which may well be exceptional in certain circumstances) for sale to 'the few' in Harrods' Food Hall.

So no, not like for like. But as I said in my OP, that's why the Bronco WILL sell like hot cakes in the world's largest 4x4 market and the Defender won't, whether or not they're in fact the same apple. JLR got rid of it's Granny Smith variety and decided only a Sekai Ichi apple would do, whilst Toyota, Ford, Jeep etc have kept theirs. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Like it or loath it though, I'd suggest that's a conscious decision by LR. To stretch the analogy possibly to breaking point Laughing , LR have a relatively small orchard (factory capacity) and so it's better for them to sell fewer premium apples in Harrods than paper bags full of Granny Smiths 'down the market'. Darren

I was told people in America are going nuts over the new defender and paying way over list price just to get them.

I think there will be a relatively small market in the USA for new Defender. Mainly bought by a few wealthy people who want to buy into the Defender name and have something more exclusive to park on the driveway or golf club car park than a Bronco or Wrangler.

And an even smaller customer base of wealthy off roaders who will use the Defender to its full potential on the trails.

But I don't think Ford or Jeep will be losing much sleep over it.

I don't think there will be any punitive taxes on LR as the UK will soon be the 51st state.....

VoilĂ , another comparison. But from a rag we recognise. I love be the Bronco in the first image. So cool. So retro. Like the Wrangler and the Jimny and the G Wagen. Oh JLR, even with your small orchard (that's now expanded to Slovakia) what have you done? Soooo much history ignored, so much potential ruined. IMHO. Big Cry

For my money, the Bronco Sport looks like the perfect replacement for the Freelander 2. I'm quite interested to see one and find out how much they'll be here. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

To snap that analogy, it's certainly true that JLR only need to be a maggot on the Jeep apple to do very nicely ~ 2020 Q2 sales were nearly 177k Shocked
